Shay narrow guage locomotive ca. 1906, still going strong. This operates the Redwood forest above Santa Cruz, CA., at Roaring Camp. These incredible gear-driven locomotives can push/pull up to 8 fully loaded logging cars up or down a 12% grade, a near impossible feat for multiple present-day diesel locomotives, let alone 1. Nowadays, the logging cars carry people, to the top of Bear Mountain and back. The open-car views of the redwoods are incredible.
