About Taken in Kruger, South Africa, in the midday heat of summer. This leopard was high up in a tree, and didn't seem too happy about being discovered. We were fortunate to watch him for about 5 minutes before he leapt down and ran off into the bush (an action I was lucky to catch on video :) )

Such a great example of why the leopard is probably doing the best of many of the wild cats. They are good at hiding, and they keep their distance usually.

Great Shot.

The closest I get to wildlife around here is either my cats, the zoo, or the vicious attack squirrels who beg munchies from the tourists! In short, keep in mind that my wildlife shooting is a bit limited. That said, things that could make this better: the first thing is I agree on the twig. I'd also include the leaf in his face. If those two elements are gone, suddenly the image changes focus. The twig can be cloned out. The leaf is a different story. It might be that a step or two to the left would have cleared up the face. The second thing is the image feels a bit soft to me. It looks like the focus is towards his rear and the leaves. Sharpening in PS might help that a bit as well. It's taken me a bit to get used to cloning out distracting elements, but I find that it's worth it.

Technical points aside, kudos to catching the moment! Getting critters to sit still long enough to shoot them is never fun. My cats only do it when they sleep!

Megan, your comment made me look again at this shot - its really nice. Must be rare to get eye contact from such an animal. Well done you.

Thanks Audrey and Cary! As for removing the twig - I'm still very new to Photoshop, but also don't like to really do much altering of my shots. I guess I need to lose my old fashioned ways, and follow in Cary's footsteps :)

Good job Megan! I too share your love of the outdoors, wildlife is real tough and this photo is a good example of why. The good thing about today's technology is that there are ways for the average photographer to make their work even better, as I am learning! Keep goin on, I love your work.

Hello Megan - Oh, wow, the leopard gave me a surprise/scare upon opening your T-nail! Not sure what I was expecting.......
wonderful capture, like the fact that part of his body is hidden by leaves. Worth considering getting rid of the little branch across from his nose to the left eye, you'd have a even stronger image.

Just to give some perspective, here's a quick (poor) shot I took of the tree - if you look quite high up you will see his back leg drapped over the branch.
