Hi John, just to let you know: I've posted my version of your shot too...:) Almost identical. I think I was a bit further out on the salt flats, though...:)

Cheers,

Hi Arwa, thanks for your comment. Of course there's a third photo on it's way...:) I know it's becoming repetitive, but can't break the habit!

Cheers,

Hi Mary Sue, Thanks for your once again very insightful and elaborate feedback.

I agree with the differences between Break of Dawn I and II, I think the key issue is the level of details and abstractism; part I is clean, no distractions, and focuses primarily on the ray of ligth as well as the tones in the sky, I think. This one, definitely is more "down to earth", including the textures and patterns in both the mud as well as the salt, making it a more dominant element. I think you nailed it spot on!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo - I am priviledged to live 5 hours away by car from that other world. I was there at the beginning of February. Just posted one of my more bizzare DV images. Great stuff you do!

Hi John, Not to worry, I saw those imprints....:) Just wait for the next one in this series. Just wait till Monday, and you'll see for yourself!

Amazing place, isn't it? When did you take this one?

Cheers,

Hugo

Hugo - Had you gone a few feet further to the left - you'd have been in my tripod holes. We shot in the evening in what is a mystical hell.

Another strong image from your Death Valley trip! What stands out for me in this one is how the salt playa forms an S-curve that pulls the viewer through the frame. There is textural detail in the front of the scene (lower part of your image) that invites you into the image rather than serve as a distraction. The various elements all hold together well.

Contrasting this one with Break of Dawn I, I find the previous one more mystical and spectacular, although I'm not sure of the reason for the different reaction. Perhaps it is the foreground texture that makes the difference. The first photograph is more perfect, more idealistic in feeling. The texture in this one roots me to reality. In the first one I had a feeling of not belonging because of the perfect other-worldliness of it all. In this one, I feel more connected to it in a real-world way. I have an idea of how that rough terrain would feel on my feet and how I would fit into that world.

Odd, perhaps I'm looney, but it is what comes to mind!

Very nice Hugo,
this is even more spectacular than the first.
The gleaming lower half contrasts nicely with the various shades above.
And the clarity/detail is awesome.

Nice work Hugo,
Lori :)
