I share Dave's opinion that this photo isn't actually about the bird, although it acts as the dominant eye catcher.
The painted feel of the reflection as well as the combination of cool and warm tones, sketching the scenery without actually showing it is what makes this shot for me.
The hint at the fish jumping out of the water, captured by the splash is a great detail, especially in combination with the Heron.
The out of focus twigs in the foreground create some sort of natural framing (I guess you can explain it that way), but make the bottom part of the image, especially in the lower right, look a bit cluttered.
Another minor point of critique is that the colours seem a bit too blueish in the foreground, and although that does illustrate the soft light and the time of day, I would prefer a bit more warmth there. Just a thought.
In all, I think it's a very appealing photo, and well captured. It shows us a fairly uncommon type of composition, yet a good one!
A nice, calm image with a great reflection, Peter! I like the bird on the rock, even though it doesn't really stand out, but it's not really about the bird, is it? Dave.
