About This is Jones Falls Locks, one of many sets of locks along the Rideau Canal which runs from Kingston to Ottawa. I find the engineering pretty incredible, building a canal through canadian shield almost two hundred years ago was quite a feat.

The Riduea Canal was originally built to provide a secure trading route between Kingston and Montreal. Today it is used exclusively for pleasure craft.

This is my first panoramic that has turned out anywhere near presentable. Please enjoy.

That's a great shot of the lock Ashley. It's the way it should look in the winter not like my shot with no snow.
I have an in depth knowledge of the Rideau Canal having been it's Chief Engineer until last January when I retired. It a great place to take photos at any time of the year.

I checked out your images of Jones Falls on your web site. They are all very nice. Looks like you were there on a very nice day.
All the best.

Ronald,

Thank you for your comment. I stitched together five pictures to make this one.

Nice panoramic.. I tried taking three side by side shots of the mountain range but forgot to manually set my aperature and shutter speed so all three had different lighting. I couldn't past them together. How many shots made this pan?

What a very intersting opportunity for taking phots having the Rideau canal to inverstiget. I took a day late last year to go revisit Merrickville and those locks there. Yes, what a feat of engineering to have done that when even that part of Canada was wilderness.
You have two images that feature snow on the first page of Usefilm that I like very much, the one f a log sticking out of the ice, and the other of a lanscape that shows the distinct lines making a fine composition.

Good job on creating a presentable panorama! It's never easy to get it just right, and it seems like it always requires hours and hours of post-processing. I really like the chilly winter scene and the historic subject you've included in it. nice one!
Best regards,
Niclas

This is more than presentable! It is a near-perfect scene for this format, and you render it with great skill and taste.

Great shot Ashley! You even got the Via Rail above! I don't get out that way (Kingston) very often, but Welland is about 1/2 hr's drive, I'll have to go there when the weather warms up a bit.
Last year, I believe it was on Amherst Island - is that close to you? - there was a whole colony of grey owls, that could be a great photo opportunity. Best regards, Ina

I have seen some of the locks alaong the Welland Canal, and they are huge and move some big lakers. If you enjoy locks I suggest that the next time you pass Kingston on the 401 make a stop at Kingston Mills locks. Take highway 15 exit, go north about 1 minute, turn left on Kingston Mills Road and stop at the locks 3 or 4 minutes later. It would make a nice rest stop.

Heres a shot I took there last summer.

I thought that I would include a picture that my wife took of me inside the lock, to give the piece a bit of scale.
