It's a really lovely shot, Bjorn. I love the colors and tone of the flower. The composition is very nice as well. One thing I would do would be to blur the texture of the dark space on the right. I think the coarse texture of the paper the flower does not provide a pleasing contrast to the flower itself. I also agree with Gayle that yoiu could have the colors pop out a bit more. But I do think the composition is fine. I've added what I think is a good example of what I mean.
Nice work!

hi,Bjorn.....ready for a CC critique?..LOL..
First off,i love the way you have composed this shot and i like the lighting...BUT...i find the contrast level flat, and personally i don't think the colors at this saturation level are very appealing...they have a murky look to my eye...
I have attached a different approach just to show you what i believe is an image with more impact...

I clarified the lighting, boosted the saturation, and darkened the black space...i also brought some more color into the darker petal that appeared to be blacker in the original.....and finally, i rotated image to be a vertical format which i feel gives it a more unique look....i like the abstract look of your image and enjoyed working with it...
regards,gayle

Thanks for your comment Mary Sue. I used a ringflash to light the rose, which is all of flash I have at this moment.
As for the 50mm, it is simply great. This is the lens I use most, sometimes (like here) together with an extension tube of 25mm. I recommend this lens to everyone.
If you want to see the results for portrait, feel free to browse my portfolio, as alot of the portraits are shot with this lens.

I'm not sure what technique you used to achieve this look, but it appears you backlit a rose with a point source of light? The layered look of the petals is nice.

The image would be stronger if more of the rose was illuminated. The negative space to the right and the upper left dominates the image and distracts from the beautiful rose.

How do you like the 50mm with the 10d? I've considered that lens before (I also shoot with the 10d), but haven't justified it yet. How does it work for portraits?
