I love this as a composition, it's simplistic and very beautiful Andree. Wonderful little daubs of colour, superbly cropped and that gorgeous background that looks so much like a patchy overcast sky..Excellent work Andree. Health problems behest me so I am a bit behind..'see' you again soon. Best wishes as always...Ray

As a committed Christian, Buddhism in general and Zen in particular obviously mean something very different to me from what they mean to you as a Buddhist! In Japan it comes over as a very remote, cold, oddly intellectual sect (oddly, because of course it is so anti-intellectual in its teaching!). I must say, of the Mahayana sects, Zen seems to come closest to the spirit of Hinayana, which I have always thought of as truer to the Buddha's teachings, in so far as we know them. Just about the opposite extreme from the various Nichiren sects, in which I personally find little that appeals. Thank you for explaining why you thought these two images expressed the spirit of Zen. That was very helpful.

Thank you for your comment. Being a Buddhist, I can tell you what Zen means to me. Contemplation, concentration, pure way of seeing the world around us. I decided to name this image and the other Zen, because the images are simple and stand alone without any reference to other objects. Like a voice without a face. Like the sound of a bird to a mind not attached to the source of the sound. What does Zen mean to you? Best regards, Andree

I think those of us who have lived in Japan for any length of time find it hard to know what westerners mean by "zen." I was puzzled by your first picture with this title and now again by this one. Here, it tends to mean a cerebral, rather remote and uncaring intellectual asceticism. I guess we're too much "on top of it" to feel much allure. I do like the image, especially the not-quite-featureless white background and the subdued colours of the restricted palette.
