I love old looking photos and .. old photos! and cows (of course)This is actually a really nice photo regardless of age, it almost has a certain style to it and the bull doesn't even really look like a bull, more like a troll or something from Lord of the Rings!

What a terrific image, especially given your 'about,' Janet! Very nice 'save' in PS...am so glad you kept it.
My father, who grew up on a farm in Nebraska, would love it (as do I)...you two could swap stories long into the night. *grin*

How cool that you kept this, Janet! Certainly not a bad start for your life of photography! This really brings back memories. Our uncle had a bull about this size, and he had him staked out with a ring in his nose just like this. I just remember being SO SCARED whenever I had to go anywhere near him! For good reason I'm pretty sure! Thanks for posting this one! Kathy

Hi Ursula, I did have a Diana camera as a kid, but never ran a roll of film through it as it was a true 'toy' for me :) I still wish I had it as they are an expensive collectors item and hard to get now. Do get a Holga for sure, they are lots of fun :) Thank you for your kind comment...I appreciate you looking!

Great history, I sure wish I had my photos that I took as a kid. My first camera, that was all mine, was a Kodak disc. My father used a Pentax SLR and I always thought that was so cool, lol!
Love your shot here and how he's looking straight at you, he is kind of scary though.

Hi to my sweet Janet...well done you for having kept this shot from your first roll of film. I was nineteen before I owned my first camera (about 8 years ago:):):) ) and I have got shots from that ( mainly pics of the girl destined to become my first wife...yawn) but I do know I took shots on the family box brownie,,,but which ones??? Your shot is a lovely piece of personal history and the story that goes with it quite amazing. That bull is an evil looking b----r and no mistake. Thank-you for sharing this. It is easy to see from it that you were always going to be good with a camera..Best wishes to you sweetie, big hugs and I'll 'see' you soon...Ray

Such interesting memorabilia Janet. And the colors are just as I remember them on the old 110's. I bet this brings back lots of memories for you. Susie

It does sound worse than it really is, Ann. He didn't feel pain unless he stepped on that chain...which by the way, he got used to and learned to manuever quite well with it...and still was able to kick up dust and show off! My Dad always threatened that he would put one on him that would drag all the way behind him, but of course, he never did. Believe it or not, my Dad is a big softie for being a farmer! Anyway, it never got any longer than it was in the photo :) I agree about those punk kids...though it would just start some new trend I am sure!

Janet, what a great idea to post this. Shows us how well you were composing your shots, even as a kid! Nicely restored too. I wonder how many other usefilmers remember their very first image or even the camera they used. Would be a great new project category actually! :))
Unfortunately for me, even though I still have my first pic, I can't post it. Well... I could... but then I'd be arrested. Either that, or the subject of the photo would hunt me down and kill me.
Cheers Rina

Not boring at all Janet. I found it all very interesting. I feel sad about those rings though. I mean I don't care to get close to a bull but I don't like to hear of rindgs in the nose either.....come to think of it...perhaps if put chains on the nose rings of some of those punk kids with bad attitudes they'd be better disciplined too. (hehe)
Thanks Janet.
Cheers - Ann :)

Hi Ann, If you look close, this bull has a chain hanging from his nose as well (about a foot to 18 inches). It was a form of discipline/control (pulling it would hurt him), as well as a place to 'anchor' him down. The cows all fit in their stanchions, but you could never get one closed around the neck of a bull. When he came into the barn, I remember that we put a rope around his neck (worthless :)) and then hooked him to his nose, too....that itself didn't hurt him, though, as long as he didn't tug and he didn't :) My Dad added the chain so that he would move a little slower as he would always have to keep his head up or be extra careful if he walked with it down (hence maybe 'charge' mode!) to avoid stepping on it. I remember we had another bull, and while he had a nosering, too, he wasn't really mean and Dad never had to hang a chain from his. I think blackleg is a muscle affliction and his legs got sore & he just couldn’t get up anymore. Vets couldn’t help… Thanks so much for your comment, Ann, and I hope my reply didn’t put you to sleep ;)

Oh Wow Janet. What a classic photo and very nicely restored. There are some great stories behind that photo. Being a city girl born and raised you'll please pardon my ignorance when I ask why do they put the ring in the bull's nose? Also what is Black leg? :( Scary story about your dad but glad he got away and lived to tell the story. Such a huge beast but his harem seems to like him :)
Great shot and thanks for posting. I enjoyed this very much.
Cheers - Ann :)

Janet, I clicked on this before I realised it was yours! The composition really attracted me. I like how he's looking at you, and that nose ring, and the colours... especially that rusty red and white wall which go well with that similar coloured cow.
