Hi Joel, For once, you leave me speachless... To me, the first one in this series (http://www.usefilm.com/image/1022410.html) is the favourite, as I find the composition in this one "a bit straight forward; just wish there was a stronger diagonal element in it. But only marginally so. I really appreciate this!

Hi Ale,
Thanks for your comment. Here's what I did:
I opened the image, cropped it square, and then used the channel mixer in CS2 to create a desaturated image. Then, I used the shadow / highlight feature of CS2, tweaked the sliders a bit, and then resized, added a minor sharpening, and expanded the canvas to create the frame... That's it.
Local contrast enhancement: I'd mask (and feather) the area i'd like to enhance the contrast in, copy it onto a new layer and then tweak the contrast, either by using shadow / highlight or levels or just by tweaking the brightness contrast.
Hope this helps, I'm sure there are many other methods...

Awesome image hugo!
This even had my wife turn her head to say, "hey, that's a nice photograph" (rare, from the woman who has 4 years of photo school behind her, and wants nothing to do with photography any more!)
...a very high compliment... ..cause I gotta force her to look at my work ;)
I love the complexity of what's going on in the capture. The dance of the steam that keeps the viewer flowing to the right is so perfect! The Dr. Suese steam tower, and the badge 'wall street' hanging there balance the left with brilliant detail, as that black box where 'wall street' is on printed, is the perfect void of negative space for the contrast of the smoke.
The person.. *perfect* that's exactly what you need in an image like this. If you hold your hand over the guy, like he's not there, then the image becomes void of warmth, and missing that organic scale that human body can add to an image.
Very well done over all! Wonderful compostion, and presentation. The thin black border presents the contrasts effortlessly!
Best detail for me about this.. that one barrier a-frame that's not flat on the ground. *perfect*
congrats on the FPD award! You're so good with this branch of your photography!

Oh my Hugo, you've been busy since I've been away and there are so many great shots to pick from. I'm popping in on my favorites from the thumbnails and right off the bat there are three. This is the first of them. Just love the composition, tonal range, and subject matter. It's a great city capture. How that smoke stack got there is a mystery -- rather odd looking. Doesn't it belong on a building...lol?! Excellent in BW. Antonia

..and nice to know your very interesting portfolio ! at a first look of your last page i find this one very attractive....an harmonic vision of downtown (it's not easy in urban environment, i think)...with this mute human presence and the underground steams which balance the scene and enphatize the mood dominating the human in his almost(?) incontrollable urban contest .

Street photography is something that pretty much anyone can practice, but it's a whole different thing how well one manages to capture true interest in their shot of this particular matter. You've done a great job of capturing action in this frame,and not just any kind of action, but the kind that people see on the street everyday and can relate to, without dying of boredom though ;) I can almost smell the atmosphere in this shot, and that's exactly what a good photo should be able to do - to awaken our senses... great work, and thanks for your comments!

The previous one has more to it than this one (and the next one, which is still to come, I might add) The steam coming up from the subway underneath is the primary subject I intended to show with this triptych. I love how there seems to be so much going on in this capture with the signs, smoke, etc., yet it seems a bit void with the person seemingly by himself (although there is another person in the back hardly visible). Interesting and well presented street photography Hugo.

B&W is always the work of light and shadow or a good amount of contrast which is the case cover in this subject, some time it is difficult to judge a work without knowing the circumstances behind the composed image, certainly the “steam” being a focal point where I think there are a good attractive elements, left as a secondary, but always the good work can be criticized ,and I think this one of excellent subject but I prefer more the previous one for its starting and ending ,so to say a very well composed where the eyes scan and not concentrate in one pin point. I think I have to contrast you for both images as a B&W strong works.

Fantastic series of steaming vents, so typical and so much part of the urban landscape! NYC is perfect in B & W - Like "Breakfast at Tiffany's" - and the utilitarian vents, cones, barriers, and even puddles and odd passers-by become sleek and glamorous, and the street stripes become fashion statements :) Great captures, Hugo, and superb contrasts. I love to just analyze a photograph and find those little things hiding within an image-whether it be intentional or not. In this one, the very first thing I spotted was that the steam was obeying the "one way" sign and going in that direction. I had at first thought, why not take out the street at the bottom-however that little bit of extra space helps the image to appear less cluttered. Of course the very first thing my eyes landed on was the huge pipe, then it followed the trail of steam and eventually lands down upon the man-who then makes you look over to the left of the image where his eyes are looking to. Thus your eyes never really seem to land in just one spot, but instead keep looking through in a continuous cycle. I could just stare at it for days...

An interesting shot with many interesting details to look at... a kind of square within the frame is created and my eyes follows it around around. I stop at the man watching me and ask my self why he is there, crossing the street or watching you capture the steem (?)....

Good addition to series but not quite the strength of first, interesting the different result shot only steps away from where the first shot was taken. I think it would have benifited to have a more interesting character in the shot(no offense guy on corner)or if the one by lamp post were more prominent, but a good fit with part one.
Looking forward to part 3.
