Here' some harlequin ducks, whose population is only about 1,000 birds on the northeast coast from New England to Alaska.

In the summer, they swim and dive in the raging whitewater of wild, cold rivers further North. They can actually walk on the bottom of rivers. Here at Sachuest Point in RI they spend most of their time close to the rocky shore, usually close to some rock being pummeled by wind-whipped surf. They bob about, dive for mussels and other mollusks, which they pry from rock crevices with their bills, and resurface, all the while gracefully dodging the rocks.

Amazing birds, pardon the poor lens quality.

Cris not here in this thread but, on the link I provided, there are a bunch of birds posted...
Thanks.... beautiful harlequins.

Chris, though the eastern population of harlequins isn't fairing well, it's estimated that the western population has 2-300,000. I've seen flocks of several hundred along rugged shorelines in the Bering Sea (NW Alaska).

Marcus, what a great idea this was! I just spent a pleasant ten minutes or so quietly going through your own beautiful bird pictures and those who chose to contribute. I, alas, living in Tokyo, and lacking powerful telephoto lenses, have nothing to contribute. We see too little of these beautiful creatures. I wonder if Usefilm could do something to encourage the photographers who specailize in them? There don't seem to be many projects connected with nature and wild creatures... Perhaps Al or whoever is running Usefilm now would care to do something about this after the upgrade is completed?

Hi Roger, This actually was a post I submitted with one bird at full size (which is now gone) and a few more at the smaller size below. I posted it as you read below and many were enjoying it and posting there shots. I was then informed by the Staff that I was breaking UF rules by posting more than one shot in a single post, And the smaller attachment photos were to be used only for members that wanted to help you with your photo and upload a different version of the same photo, That If i was allowed to do this everyone would start posted multiple photos within one post putting strain on the server. The photo was remove but this thread and all photos are still here? For a few nature shooters this was the last straw in a couple of years of trying to get more things for the nature shooter to do, and a couple did quit. For me I thought It was a fun idea where we could all contribute our photos and see others. I had planned to do this with other subjects but not wanting to go to UF prison I have followed there NEW rule :) Remember UF is a place where Pro and novice photographers post photos and leave valuable critiques, not a place for fun and games LOL (what a joke). So I am really close to joining the list of EX-UF members at this point...
Take Care Roger.

Well, that's all news to me. I can understand how this reaction would encourage people to leave. A better reaction would have been "This doesn't quite fit into our present system, so how can we cater for this need, what changes do we need to make, and what other groups of people might find the new possibilities attractive?" But that is not the attitude... alas. Thank you for the explanation. I am glad to have caught it before it gets deleted as subversive.

Hi Marcus, I have read your heated replies to my yesterday's question in connection with Neanderthal Man. By the time I finished my response, shockingly and most curiously, the whole thread disappeared. I'd love to post this answer to you but obviously I do not want to do it under one of your photos. Do you have an address to send it? Cheers, György

Dont be shocked, These topics do get heated and thinks are said that are a bit over the edge, I take them as should you with a grain of salt. The admin here on UF will remove a thread should they feel it is getting out of hand, nothing new. feel free to email me at support@armaniphotography.com
Thanks..
