  Q. Tags
Wouter van Noort
Asked by Wouter van Noort    (K=4369) on 5/8/2007
It would be awesome if there was an option to add tags to images (like many other so called web 2.0 sites). And of course the possibility to search for images with a certain tag.

The reason for asking this, is that i often browse the site looking for some inspiration. This day it was raining most of the day and i would like to see how other photographers approach such conditions. So i like to search for images tagged with 'rain'.

Perhaps categories would suffice? They are, essentially, tags and can be searched.

please don't try to turn uf into another "social networking" site, there's more than enough myspace clones already.

Is that social networking or merely trying to learn from others here? I hope to learn a lot and have already. I think UF is great (and yes, I'll send in my donation soon).

Well, i doubted already if i should ask this question. I am not interested at all in a Flickr clone. There are stunning images and very good discussions to be found on Flickr, but it's very hard to find them in a consistent manner. That's why i prefer UF.

In the past I was able to achieve the equivalent of Tags by googling the usefilm web site with my own made up keywords. I have not used it a lot but the advanced search box in google allows this with little to no effort.

I just used the keyword "rain" on the usefilm.com domain and got 501 hits, many unique photos. The google trechnique works perfectly.

You are right: google returns about 7000 results. The only drawback is that you can't see a thumbnail, so you'll have to open them all.

Wouter -- You are getting to many hits. Be sure that on the ADVANCED SEARCH page, further down on the page you first fill in the domain name which would be usefilm.com. You cannot rely on putting usefilm.com in the keyword search section at the top. That is because there are numerous non-usefilm pages that contain the domain name. By filling in the domain name box, Google will only return hits that are actually USEFIM site hits. So in my example if you search on the word "rain" and fill in the domain box you will only get 501 hits, not 7,000 hits.
Look at the advanced search page; there are other things you can fill in to further restrict your search. Also note that there is a difference between keywords in the ALL WORDS line as compared to the Exact Phrase box.
Properly completed searches can be narrowed considerable. It just takes a little practice.
--Best to you, Jan

Jan. That was exactly what i did. I also noticed that Google reports a count of the results, but that is not the actual number of results you will see. So, when i google on rain on the domain "usefilm.com" Google reports about 28,400 results but only shows 1000. When i use the domain "usefilm.com/image" it reports 7,580 results, but shows 595.

You can also do all this from the standard search box. For example, this produces good results:

rain "Best in Project" site:usefilm.com/image

And funny, guess the name of the photographer that comes first...

Pretty amusing that my image comes up first. What a coincidence! :)
