  Photography Forum: Suggestions:
  Q. Critiques and Comments WishList
James Cook
Asked by James Cook    (K=38068) on 6/28/2006
I have two suggestions for improving the quality of the comments sections of image postings. (They would presumably also improve this forum as well.)

First, adding the ability for a member to edit their own comments on a post after they have been loaded. There are several scenarios wherein this will be valuable. For instance, since when replying to one person within a thread one must first click on the Reply link, and since sometimes we are prone to type in the Comment field forgetting about the Reply link, we would then be able to delete the Comment and replace it with an appropriate Reply (and so generate the e-mail to the person replied).

Second, make Replies subs of Comments so that as a person scans down the thread it can be seen easily which are Comments directed at the poster and which are Replies directed at some previous Comment (or previous Reply).

If this is not clear, I am happy to give additional information.

Thank you,

James

It has occurred to me that an objection might be raised to implementing both of these suggestions: if someone deletes a Comment (or Reply) to which there exist sub Replies, what happens to the orphans? Well, in that case the site would insert a generic "Comment Deleted by Author" Comment as a place holder to support the Orphans.

Could also put a time limit of 10 minutes to correct any error, after that you cannot change it or delete it. Or if there are sub replies then it cannot be deleted. This would keep the continuity of the thread.

Or at least if allowing the edits, don't allow the contents to be empty. I mean it'd be nice to look a little less like an ijjit, but I guess mostly folks would want to use this feature just to fix spellling errrors or posted links and such like.
