  Q. My new website
Mervo
Asked by Mervo     (K=8643) on 1/2/2006
This is not advertising, because I aren't selling my images (Not good enough) but I wanted to ask your opinions of my new site. It's taken me ages to get right, coded in notepad and gallery made in jalbum I think it looks ok considering I only know very basic HTML - and editing the css files of the templates was "fun".

Any thoughts?

Hiya Mervo

I've had a look and spotted a couple of issues, but let me just start by saying it looks great. I found the style and layout to be very appealing. Great job. I love that you've used jalbum. It rocks, doesn't it?

Ok, looking at the source code for the top menu/frame, I think you can eliminate needless nbsp by doing the following;
- Make the table that contains the three rows: width=100%
- Divide the first row into 2 cols, making the first col: width=10%height=25 align=left. And the second col: width=90% height=25 align=right.
- The second row will contain the trappedlight image so the attributes should read: colspan=2 height=100
- The third row should be: colspan=2 height=25 align=right
- If you don't want the text to hit the side of table, just include, 'style=padding-right:5px;' to the td tag.

There's no page to display for the link "about me". THAT was truly disappointing :))
When I hit the "My website" link, it opens in the top frame! At this point, I can't see why that's happening, but I'll take a better look at it later and let you know.

You have links to external websites opening up under your top frame, which is a big webdesign etiquette no-no. Links must either replace the entire page OR open in a new window. I think it can sometimes get a little confusing when it comes to iframes. To save problems at any time when it comes to external links, always remember: target=_blank.

Other than that, your website's pretty bloody good my friend! Gee wiz mate, all credit to you for doing this in notepad.

If I can be of anymore help (not that you really need it) feel free to get back in touch with me.

Cheers
Rina

Hi Rina!

Thanks a lot for taking the time to inspect my site and give me your opinion, it's appreciated!

Right, I fixed the top part with the links and the nbsp, I'll be honest and say that originally that td only contained the blog link, and it was aligned to the right so it was fine, but then I realised that I needed a copyright line on my site at least somewhere obvious so I added that to the td, being lazy and not bothering to adjust the table - but I have done it now :P

The links within my blog page are fixed too, when I edited the blogger template I forgot to add the "_new" part - more haste less speed!!!

Jalbum is the bees knees - and for free! The only problem I encountered was after compiling the album, there was an "up" icon in the album, along-side the left and right navigate buttons, which loaded up index.htm - which is fine, except that my site gets loaded inside itself and there is no way that I could suss out how to fix it - eventually I edited the template source and it no longer generates the "up" to index.htm button - weeee!!!

The "about me" is coming, once I can decide on what to put and how to lay it out - other than that I think I fixed everything... (He says)

Thanks a lot for helping me and bringing these points to my attention!

All the best, Merv.
