  Q. Taking Photographs in NYC Without Looking Like a Tourist?

Asked by [[dead account]]    (K=6692) on 12/2/2004
I'm headed to Manhattan on Satuday for 5 days on business and plan to do a little street photography when I have time with my new DSLR.

How can I accomplish this without looking like a rube? In the past I've used smaller, less obtrusive cameras, but now that I have to use a viewfinder and the camera is really large, it seems that it will be difficult to blend in.

Any suggestions?

I've gone a couple of times to NYC to do the same " hunting for the best NYC photo " and what I usually do to avoid looking like a tourist is 1) spend some time in the area you want to take the photo so you can blend in with the habitat, 2) try to wear a NYC outfit, so you look just like another Nyorkean, and 3) do not, under any excuse speak japanese....75% of the tourist you will see in Manhattan are Japanese, in fact there are like 10 japanese families with photos taken by me.... ;-)

Enjoy your trip!

First thing you learn about nyc is to say screw it and just do it.

Second thing you learn is how to fight off muggers :)

Have some fun, look like a rube, nobody will notice nor care really.

If anyone says anything try speaking a different language and they tend to go away.

Allow me to reassure you that there is little you can do to attract attention to yourself in Manhattan. Plenty of people are on the street all times of day in every neighborhood. Everyone has pretty much seen everything, and blending in does not take any effort. The things that bother people here are the same things that bother people anywhere else. (Suddenly stopping on while walking on a particularly crowded sidewalk is probably the number one tourist-related offense that comes to mind).
Enjoy your time in (still) the greatest city in the world.

Who really cares if you look like a tourist, especially in NYC. People just pass you by. They aren't really looking at you and saying, "Boy, look at that tourist." If you're going to do any street photography, get used to being given the once over.
Regards,
Glen

i'm just going to echo what's been said. don't worry about looking like a tourist. you ARE a tourist, so to look like one isn't the end of the world. plus, nobody cares....just do what you need to do to get those great photos. have fun!

Don't use a DSLR, use a film camera.

NYC is a an international city so whereever ou are from it wont matter anybody.People think that everybody is tourist and alson nobody is a tourist:)But If you are Japanese your chance of bein a tourist is more possible.I have lots of pictures in NYC and never think ofmyself as a tourist.
Best Regards

In Times Square there is a singing cowboy who wears a white cowboy hat and cowboy boots. He plays the guitar and sings in his underwear. Any questions? -john

Ah, the naked Cowboy. if that doesn't stand out, nothing will. Seriously, just shoot ! There are always Tourists, ametures, and Pros walking everywhere. I work in Midtown Manhattan, and when I go out for lunch I always see a couple cameras, and the occasional Pro shoot. No one even thinks twice about it.
