  Q. Wedding Proofs supplied on CD??
Larry Hammond
Asked by Larry Hammond    (K=16631) on 10/11/2004
When wedding proofs are put on CD and offered to cutomers as proofs, what protection is there that prints, transfer of pictures from these CD's are not done, by someone? Is there any way, short of your name across all images, to really copyright your work?? I can't envision dong this??

Most professionals can attach a digital signiture to prevent theft.

The best blatant thing to do is offer a crappy screen resolution image for the proof - one at 72 dpi with lower JPG quality compression that will look just awful if printed, but will give a good example of the photo on screen.

You can also run a logo or burn a background image into the image.

I would follow Michael's advice, but also you would be surprised at the respect most other photographer, and printers/labs have for copyrighted work. I would make up a CD label, that says something to the effect of:
PROOF IMAGES
These images are copyrighted and may not be reproduced without direct written consent.

You would be surprised at how many people will respect that, but if you are giving them low res images, it really wouldn't matter anyhow.

Also consider supplying your proofs in multi-page PDF format - where you can apply various levels of security to the document, such as No Printing, copying of graphics, or opening the file in another program such as photoshop.

the problem isn't competitors and pro labs, the problem is the customer taking the CD to the digital print booth at the local drugstore and running it through there or making prints on his own inkjet.

Watermarks are indeed about the only protection, in combination with low-res images.

You could always try using a PDF slideshow, such as those generated by Photoshop Album (or Elements). You can burn these to CD's in an 'Autorun' format and configure them yourself.

Thanks for your suggestion. What you are thinking is put into slide show, they couldn't be printed from??

I had some in slide show for something else, and just disabled the player from the file and then could open each shot seperately.

I am thinking the low res idea will work.....??

Larry
