Q. Dark Scans with CanoScan FS 4000US

Has anyone else had problems with dark scans (of slides) while using the default options on the CanoScan FS 4000US? I have tried manually adjusting the "exposure" setting in FilmGet 1.0 by a factor of +1, but I lose detail in the highlights of my scans if I do this. Is there anything I can do apart from significantly increasing the brightness (in Photoshop) of originally dark scans? Many thanks in advance for your input.

I don't know Filmget, but is there any way you can get to a 'gamma' or curve adjustment, or perhaps a histogram so you can set black and white points? Try www.normankoren.com for a good supply of info about this scanner.
I have heard the Canon software being criticised frequently, and you might want to take a peek at Vuescan (free demo at www.hamrick.com, about US$40 I think). It's not as pretty or easy to use as most supplied scanning software (sorry Ed), but it will give you much more control and help get the best out of the scanner.

Thanks for your ideas, Mark. I'll try the histogram function and, failing that, will look into VueScan.

You may want to check to see what Gamma setting you are using. To check: Start FilmGet,click Settings (at top), and click Monitor Gamma (in drop down menu). You should be at 1.8 or 2.2. Typically, 1.8 is used for Mac and 2.2 is used for PC. I have a PC and like 1.8 better (the higher the number, the lighter the scan).
I agree with Mark on Vuescan. It has a very nice Multi-Pass feature that really helps with the quality of the scan (esp. with noise). Since I started using it with my FS4000US, FilmGet hardly ever gets used.
