  Q. Just Curious, What is your favourite photo editing software for RAW?
Scott S
Asked by Scott S    (K=209) on 10/29/2006
I have always used CS2 when I was using a PC but I recently went over to MAC and things couldn't be any better. I really like aperture, I like the RAW interface, and the non-destructive editing process. With photoshop it opened a window for every photo you would edit, and for raw it would open its own window and things would just get incredibly messy with files and saving, For a while aperture diddn't really have too much of an edge of photoshop as far as editing functionabililty, but i belive its gotten a lot better and I hardly ever use CS2 for anything other than Graphic Desing Projects. However adobe has since released LIGHTROOM which is very similar to Aperture. I just pose this question to see what others use for their photo editing

Hi Scott,

CS2 is my primary mean of importing RAW files on my mac. I just like the one stop shop kind of thing. I haven't tried Aperture yet, mainly because the guys at Camulet told me the app absorbs a lot of resources. There are a few other programs I toyed with (Nikon brand software packages), and I've also tried a few other apps but never really found the added value of the single image/app processing workflow I get with Adobe.

Interesting topic, I'm always curious what others use, and how they go about their workflow.

How's Lightroom treating you? I've seen the interface, but never really played with it yet.

Cheers,

Hugo

I haven't used lightrom yet, not planning on it, I like aperture too much, it is a resource hog, but if your machines fast enough it shouldn't be that bad....

still pretty much an amateur, but i've tried them all. PS is the king of photo editing, but i hate bridge.

i love aperture. for me it's quick and easy. still early days for the program with a few quirks but that's expected.

i love organization and knowing where and how everything is, being Mac, they once again have hit the nail on the head...

Mac is the undisputed king of the world...

CaptureOne PRO works quite well.

I use Bibble to initially flick through the photos, and weed out the bad ones - because it will show you a quick 100% preview.
Then I use Nikon Capture NX to fine tune the RAW, and if the image needs something more - I hop over to Photoshop.
It sounds long winded - but it works for me!

I'm trying to find my way with RAW workflow testing different stuff available. Problem for me seems to be with handling FujiFilm RAFs. I'm proud Fuji S3Pro owner but bought the body without firmware converter. It's only because I've read a lot of bad comments about Hyper-Utility Software HS-V2 but now realized that was really great misleading - as none of the commercial converters can handle Fuji RAFs well. I'm now with ACDSEE Pro for trial, but went through with CS2, Lightroom, PhaseOne and Biblie - and at the end may come back to some but I'm also looking where to get my Fuji firmware - they do not sell it as standelone piece in America.
I can still use their free LE RAF converter and get fullsize TIFFs but then have to a use choice of mine editing software to finish - it seems to be a quite odd workflow.
Hey, it's my experience so far and I'm not saying I've landed for good anywhere yet.
Cheers, NJ

Has anybody tried Silkypix? A japanese software which is appears to be well received in german RAW user circles. I use it after RAW Shooter sold out to Adobe and I am quite happy with it especially with the control it gives but it is very heavy on the computer resources, too. Unfortunately I cannot compare it with other RAW converters. Anyway I am dearly missing RAW Shooters "vivid" function. HAve not figured out how to get similar results.
Cheers JR

Since the release of Lightroom, it's lightroom... PS (CS3 beta) will only be used for the more elaborate tweaks...

Cheers,

Hugo

I really like Lightroom. I've been using it since the beta. I use it for adjustments, crops, and printing. I like that it offers something for the entire workflow, and I find that it responds a lot more quickly than Aperture did.
I use Photoshop for putting together posters, multi-pane photos and extreme edits. I also use it for layouts for websites, etc. I've never used it that mucc for general photos adjustments, because it's just too heavy for that.
I have a Nikon D80, and Lightroom handles the Nikon NEF with ease. I've been very happy so far.

The new CS3 raw with the latest RAW update works fantastic, I really like the Option's recovery, fill light and blacks options then work well. I really don't like the clarity option because it introduces a large amount of noise into the image
