  Q. What is the difference between ......?
Kambiz K
Asked by Kambiz K   Donor  (K=37420) on 5/9/2006
What is the difference between two kind of savings in PS7?

Usually after what I manipulate my image I do the following:
File->Save as *.jpg

Apparantly there is another save method by 'Saving for web'
by going to Optimized-> Image size

I would like to know what is the difference of these two kind of saves? Which one is better than another one and WHY?

Thank you for giving your answer.

Firstly, to save for web, go to: File -> Save for Web and select your preferences from within the dialog window that appears. If you select "Optimized -> Image size", you're asking Photoshop to do the thinking for you by optimising to your desired file size (obviously not recommended if you really want control over results).

Now, 'Save for Web' feature includes many options that will allow you to produce a copy of your image that is optimised for web use. This means that the image file will be as small as possible, and that the image will use only web-safe colours (if desired).

The feature can produce GIF, JPEG, or PNG format images. Within the dialog, choose how you'd like to optimise your image for web. You can select the file format to produce, what size palette to use, how to cut down the colours to fit the chosen palette size, how much to dither the optimised image (if needed) and how much to sacrifice image quality to produce a smaller file size.

So, when saving images as JPEGs for web, using the 'Save for Web' feature allows you to preview the effect of compression before committing.

However, if you're not saving images for web use or control over file size/compression is not an issue, then by all means use "Save As".

Good luck.
Rina.

Also, in PS7, go to: Help -> Photoshop help (or hit F1 on your keyboard). You'll be amazed at the wealth of information at your disposal.

Thank you Rina, but the S/W that I have does NOT have help feature!

'Save for Web' will work with any mode of original. 'Save As' will only allow you to save in compatible formats - eg if you have a 16 bit file 'Save As' will not allow you to save it as a JPEG, but 'Save for Web' will. Similarly, if you have layers you can't 'Save As' a JPEG.

Best,
Helen

Then why on earth did you mention PS7 if you don't even use it???? No, forget it, don't answer that. Geez you're weird Kambiz. Hate to say it, but I think you put up these random questions because you get off on the attention.

With a bit of luck, maybe the "spooky deletion" thing will happen here too.

Rina,
First of all I DO HAVE PS7, but IT DOES NOT HAVE HELP SECTION. Because a person made a copy for me.
Secondly I use it almost every day. And you could look at the end products in my portfolio.
Thirdly I think you are too weired also by NOT giving the right answer. I DID NOT force you to answer me, did I?

And finally are you trying to tell me that spooky person is YOU, oh God help us!

Thank you Helen.
So what I understood from you that both save, but the method of saving for web give you more options.

Kambiz:

You have PS7 but no manual? There is a link to the Adobe web site if you click on the very top of the default tools pallette. You should have a manual included in the *LEGAL* copy unless you purchased this OEM, in which case the OEM copy is usually for an experienced user.

There are a few walkthroughs on the web.

Also do not forget I am not an Arab Person. I am an Iranian (Persian) and my language is not arabic.

I do not know what those senteces mean. Sorry.
Try to ask Arab people about it.

Software piracy won't be tolerated. any more mention I'll ask Al or Phil to remove the accounts in question and report the account owner to applicable law enforcement agencies if those can be determined.

Oh, that is disappointing. Nevermind then.

I really do wish you would stop yelling at me though. Why do you keep accusing me of your imagined hidden activities? It's not very polite, you know.

Anyway, accusations aside, it was fun while it lasted and I still love you. Have a great weekend :)

I didn't shout at you.
And, I am sorry you felt like that.
I prefer to stop my discussion here.

If you think you could help me to solve my problems with the "SAVE" business, I would be all ears to hear, otherwise forget it.

Perhaps some body who knows more about PS7 would help me.

Kambiz,
1.Rina is not staff and does not delete anything
2.she knows quite a bit about PS7 as she told you in her first answer to you
3.when you write in all CAPS,it is general online knowledge that it means you are shouting (you can Google "internet etiquette" to find out about online behavior)
4.Rina is my friend and a fun, helpful lady,so i hope you can learn to "chill" ;>
I received an error message from the system when i first tried to post that news article,so there is a possibility that when you posted the url, that there was a glitch like the one i had,or the moderator didn't understand what he was deleting...they are human,too...except the alien ones!..hehehe peace, gayle
