  Q. Yashica Mat 124G

Asked by John McDuffie    (K=0) on 7/20/2005
Anybody got one and what do you think about it? I was skeptical about mine. I purchased it for $30. It was clean as they come and not a blemish on it. Still have the original leather case, box, and manual. I'm having trouble locating anyone that manufactures accessories for it. Anybody got any clues?

Do a search for KEH.com Out of Atlanta. Good dealer for used cameras and accessories.

Thanks.I'm looking at their website now and I like what I see.

eBay is a great place for 124G stuff. The lens use what is called a BAY 1 mount if you are looking for lens accessories.

$30 - you got a fantastic deal!

I bought one on ebay a few months ago for $76. It is in very good condition although one roll had uneven spaces between frames. Not so much that it affected any frames though. I really like the camera, everyone wonders what it is and the features go way beyond my holga. Shutter and aperture work fine and I even found the Wein replacement battery for the meter which also works fairly well. I think that I would like to have interchangeable lenses but I am satisfied with this camera for the money.

It's a very nice MF camera for an amateur on budget who want to get high quality prints. I also got mine Yashica Mat from eBay. Any Y124 usually needs CLA. I would recommend Mark Hama Ltd in Marietta, GA (http://www.markhama.com). I guess it's the best service (at really reasonable prices) nationwide. If you send it to Hama, you shouldn't worry about parts anymore, he has everything. The only thing to remember. This camera has a teriffic bug. NEVER set flash control to M position! Block it with a piece of scotch at X. Unless you want to get your shutter jammed. I did (thanks to Hama's rescue). Hope, this comment would be helpful somehow.

As for accessories, I bought adapter BayonetI-49 mm on eBay and use regular Hoya HMC filters. On eBay you also can buy Wide Angle and Tele Photo adapters. The Y124 prime lens tends to produce flare, so the hood would be desirable (I have it all the time attached). If you want to use cable release, try to find really slim one. Regular cable obstruct hood and cause vignetting.

I have a 124g and having owned a hasselblad I can say with some authority the 124 performs really well.

The Yashica Mat 124G is one of the most underrated medium format cameras around. Starting at F/8, the lens (at least on mine) is very sharp. It's very dependable, and built well. Accessories? Look on ebay. That's where I got my 124G. And just like any other product, new or used, you get what you pay for (unless you get lucky).

I have just brought a Y124G and it is better than the ebay description $200.00 with ERC. Yes the rollei 2.8 GX is better wide open, and yes the Mamiya C330s has better build, BUT the Y124G is light, compact and possibly the most modern functioning TLR. If used between F8 and F11 with Neopan 100 Acros 18X18 enlargements still hold detail under a 8X loupe. When my 8400F arrives later this week I will post some scans.
