  Q. AE PRISM FINDER

Asked by DK PERRYMAN PHOTOGRAPHY    (K=65) on 7/18/2005
For the Mamiya RZ camera, the AE Prism finder when it is attached to the camera, how are you to know if its working properly? I just recenty purchased one for my RZ67, and besides focusing the subject matter I don't even know if its working. Is some kind of light to show you if you are focusing the subject correctly? If this is a dumb question please excuse me. Please no wisecracks. Thank you for your time and patience.

There are a few things you need to find out first. Is the RZ that you have an original RZ or and RZ Pro II? Is the finder one made for the original RZ or is it one made for the Pro II?

If you have an original RZ then you should be ok with either finder, however if you have an RZ Pro II and an older finder you will need to send the finder to Mamiya for an upgrade. They change the circuit board in it so it is compatible with the camera. It used to cost around $100 for the modification, not sure what it is now.

The finder has no ability to tell if you are focussing correctly. It is purley for measuring the light and setting the speed.

Make sure that your body is set to AEL on the speed control, this will transfer the speed to the finder.

Set your finder to either the spot or center weighted metering mode as desired.

Next if you look through the finder you will see small numbers in red as you move the camera around from light to dark. You can either set the speed and then adjust the aperture for a proper center reading or set the finder to AEL and the camera will work in aperture priority where it will adjust the camera speed based on the aperture you set. You should see the numbers in red inside the finder. The display is different on the older style non Pro II finders but it should operate in a similar manner.

If you don't see the number or meter change in the viewfinder as you aim it from light to dark then the finder is not working.

Note: The finder exposure may change slightly if you are not using a stock Mamiya focusing screen, or some of the non standard screens as the light is read off of the screen through the prism, not from behind the mirror.
