Oh, I noticed you said you are using noise ninja. Nothing from nothing, but noise ninja hasn't had a major update in 3 years. This is significant because noise reduction algorithms have become dramatically better since Ninja's introduction, and today, if I had to rate noise removal software, NN would be dead last in its ability to reduce noise.

As a matter of fact, since NN was developed when there weren't consumer DSLR's of greater than 6 MP, the program fails miserably when applied to sensors of greater resolution, introducing both blurriness and other digital artifacts.

I would stay away from Ninja until another update is released, but its my personal opinion that Picture Code has ceased development of NN because they think it's unnecessay (its a cash cow for the company). No updates for 3 years is a poor way to run a company.

Hi Sal,

Great to see you on the front page again. Very powerful image, and an almost extraterrestial feel. Cool!

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Sal,

So nice to see you on the front page again, this is an excellent piece.

My only concern is that the high-pass filter was used a little too aggresively on the foreground and the haloing around the rocks is quite severe. The rocks on the left side are bordered by a black line and the clouds in the background are significantly lighter where the clouds touch the rocks.

You can do three things to correct this...

1) Use a high pass with a radius of fewer pixels in a layer above the background, and adjust the opacity of that layer to sharpen to a more natural degree.

2) Use a feathered selection that more closely borders the rocks, i.e. of less pixels.

3) Get a graphics tablet and mask the rocks by hand, pixel by pixel.

I hope this helps you improve this gorgeous photo.

cheers,

t

First I 'noise ninja-ed' the clouds only. Then I adjusted the magical 'Shadow/Highlight' on the clouds only, and finally I tweeked up the sat. on the clouds maybe 8-11 points. The noise ninja is critical here, it kills the digital noise artifacts without dulling the focus so that when you adjust the levels or the shadow and highlight or the saturation your result does not get annoyingly noisey or grainy.

Salvatore Rossignolo   {K:13559} 8/18/2006
Actually Paul, the sky is natural except the obvious sat/ contrast /manipulation, the sharpening is what "lifted" the cloud scape of the rock. Honest Abe!

impressive landscape, colors and contrast.

Just the slightest bit of edging indicates that the sky was comp'd in Sal, but that's a minor point that doesn't really detract from this POWERFUL landscape!

Surreal shot, Sal! This is what I imagine life on Mars looks like - apart from the odd green leafy stuff. Very proficient postprocessing!
