About The ship on the right was the standard WWII design, the Fletcher class. They were fast, well armed and rather crowded to live on. On the left is the Forrest Sherman class, the first post WWII destroyer class to be built. They were almost as well armed, almost as fast, and being almost twice as large, a bit more spacious to live on. The crew size was larger on the older ship. I always found it kind of interesting that with each succeeding class, the ships got larger and the crews got smaller. Fewer people to take care of more ship. Some how the designing engineers have ignored the fact that automation can't do everything. It still takes manpower to clean and maintain the vessel, to provide for damage control and emergency teams, to load the beans and bullets, and to keep things fixed. I've heard all the lofty reasons but, less people means less capable.

It must be an old photo because even the crane is very old in design. Good photowork and a good scan. Nice description.
