That is an electrical wire attached to the insect.
I was photographing an experient where they were tracking the movements of aphids on plants!!

I shoot most of these under studio flashlights so, as long as I can hold the lens/eos 1ds combo steady, and the insect stays still for long enough, I dont have any problems :)
Wont be many more of these tho, as the science division I worked with made my position redundant, now Im in another area shooting executives at cocktail parties!! a difficult subject as you can imagine :)
Should also be a criteria for the most patience.
I certainly dont have enough to chase down birds like you do.
I've only ever done one bird shot which drove me nuts and that was shot in my own front yard :)

Wow. that is amazing, I am at the begginers stage of macro, which is 1.5 to 1 max, which means i can make something realitively small look decent, but no where near something this small, I really wish this site had a degree of difficulty project, as this is right up there with shooting a hawk flying at 40mph... i am amazed as the 5X shots I have seen were usually bigger insects and just part of them, and no where near this quality..

Fabulous Macro, this is how it should be done! perfect lighting and a DOF you probably could only get from lots of experience. I tried the MP but it was too much for me. Not a begginers lens, but you seem to work it perfectly as I know how small these guys are. do you ever use it up to 5X?

I will try today again with F8, the problem is that I use the camera flash but is to close to the objetive that make a big shadow in the low part of the pic :(

Its a blob of some kind of glue.
The gold line at the back going into the blob is actually a wire.
Dont ask its too weird :)
