About i shot this into the sun. when i went to work on the pic afterwards i was reminded of turner whose paintings i've recently seen at the AGO here in toronto. turner has this blast of overwhelming light in his paintings, generally in the upper-left corner. it was like he had this blast of light stuck in his eye and he couldn't see beyond it. anyways, that's where this one's coming from.

hey, you're the shadowman dude! ;) thanks for that comment. i agree with you about using classical painters as a point of reference. i often think about their work when i'm taking a photograph or when i'm working in PS.

turner's also good because of his use of light. i don't know if it would be possible to achieve the same kind of light because of his technique, but is definitely something to aspire to.

i'll let the site admin know about the project and see what happens. that's a great idea! maybe there can be a section on here that is dedicated to photographs that try to replicate or are in the vein of old masters kind of thing.

yeah, the tate is turner heaven. i'll take a look at your references. i don't know Frederick Ferdinand Schafer, but sure i'll like it!

thanks again and have a good w/e!

Lucy -
Very intersting. As photographers we spend a lot of time looking at photographic images and the composition in them, however we should also be looking at works by the prolific landscape artists.

I think you have triggered a terrific idea for a photo project that you might want to offer to the site admin... ie do a project using Turner's style as a point of departure. Turner is a good one to work from because so many of his images are available online.

Another good one to work from would be Frederick Ferdinand Schafer (1839-1927) whose work is available at http://ffscat.csail.mit.edu/ffshtml/
.

The Tate Gallery has a reasonably good collection of Turner images online at http://www.tate.org.uk/ (See Turner online or Turner worldwide). To me one of the more intersting is the image at http://www.tate.org.uk/collection/T/TW0/TW0513_9.jpg which shows part of the artists use of light.
