PS work is evident over the edges of the trees.
James,
You might know it already - you can make a copy of the layer you want to brighten or darken by selecting the part and using 'control + J' in PS. For ex. here, select the dark trees and make a copy do the brightening.
Then use use 'control + E' to merge down to flaten the image.

Yes light can do wonderful things sometimes! I have yet to paint with light, but will try it soon! Although I love the natural lighting best, I like to experiment. The reflections in this image are just wonderful as is the composition of this photo! Bravo! :)
