Even with the soft pastel sky and terra cotta landscape this image has a great desolation about it. A lonliness, that if you were driving along this road it would never seem to end, just taking you over the next hill and down through the next valley. Not wanting to let you go. It would be incredibly picturesque at first but then the feeling of being in such a remote area would instil fear and the beauty would disappear. A great capture Hugo with a disquieting quality.

Some other members mentioned that there is no real point of interest; this is true, but in landscape photography this does not worry me too much, usually. At least it does not if the image is well composed and balanced, as is the case here; the curly road gives something to hang on to, it leads the eye through the image. And it makes the viewer wonder what is behind that hill :)

Very nice Hugo! Great composition, the road draws me right into the image nicely! Very interesting colors also, the gray of the street is picked up nicely throughout the hills making for a nice balance. And I like the patches of white here and there on the ground. At first I thought it was snow, but after looking for a while, I'm thinking it's not.......(is it?)
Framing is also very nice. I especially like the extra width on the left and bottom, good choice!

Hi Jon, Thanks for your comment. Must've been quite a disappointment of the D70's glitch. I'm happy it's sorted out properly by the camera store. I always find it very anoying when such a thing happens. A waste of time, as you undoubtedly were dying to try out the camera, and I know how it feels checking if it's you or the camera.... That uncertainty is devastating..

Dear hugo, wonderful shot!! very beautiful... yes I took the plunge and now am the owner of my 'first real' DSLR! however the last twenty-four hours have been my worst nightmare! I noticed that a lot of the first shots i took were very soft, especially some flowers near where they were canoeing... got home and set up a test for back focus, ( which seems to have been plaguing the D70's) sure enough it was back focusing approximately three and a half to 4 cm! i couldnt believe it!! sat up till 4:00 in the morning testing and testing w/ different settings.. to no avail, every test showed severe back focus! got so upset I had to take two Valiums... anyway, took it back to the camera store today and they had just received a shipment with much newer serial numbers than the one that back focussed. i just spent an hour testing this one and it seems to be dead on!!!! thank God I plan on getting a sigma 70-300 super macro II for it next week, cause I really like to be able to reach out with a zoom.... thanks again for all your wonderful and very helpful comments! I may need your help to get up and running with this seemingly complex camera...your friend....jon

Hi Christian, Thanks for your comment. I thought long and hard before uploading this shot in the triptych first, as in the oriiginal setting, it was the second... The reason I uploaded this one first was mainly based on two reasons. The patch of snow in the distance is the prelude to the second shot (which I'll be posting in a few minutes)
Although I do agree with the crop you proposed, (it is more balanced) the dificult thing with tripyches is that I also try to create a unity in the formats, and tell the story in three images... IMO, it adds another challenge...;o)

A really nice composition, beautiful curly-swirly road leading ones eyes to an interesting edge that could be the end or beginning, or just a part of eternity. Very good light, colours and details! Interesting info too, but perhaps you should take away "Netherlands" from location! ;-)

Roads day !!..Actually this image is very interesting one to me if been elaborated to match some important tricks or techniques. To me again it is unsymmetrical one and the point of interest is lost ,,what that mean, is, by exploring the existing lines ?road? in a scene, we can move the viewer?s gaze deeper into the photo interest point, making it a more dynamic and engaging work, this road ?known as leading line ,is often used to direct the point of interest to the main subject ,,your main subject is the little village of Duzaj, which this road leads us , by converting the imaginary into vertical one, and cropping un necessary side elements to keep the interesting point on the top of the mountain,the Christian Barrette example is just perfect one,, I like this photo that's why I spend time ,looking at it, nice job, Saeed

Great picture Hugo!!!! I love the perspective of the row and its curves leading you somewhere... It reminds me of the roads of Mexico... where you can drive through for hours feeling sometimes lonenly, sometimes free and sometimes feeling that you own the world...

A road to nowwhere, thats the impression we have! And Gerhard?? I dotn agree with him, sometimes the the trick let your imagination do teh rest, special when there is a storie to ilustrate this Picture, I am not a beliver of a Picture beeing worth of 1000 words all the time...the main use of photography is still to ilustrated a news on a newspapper or a news website. I like this picture because it give us the idea of a place where there was live and no there is just a road that lead us to nowwhere...

Very effective vanishnig point in a barren landscape. Patches of snow here and there are interesting, but I think that the one on top of the hill is the most appealing, as it opens up the vanishing point.
Have you considered another crop, like this one, to make that patch a focal point, near the UR third ? It's only an idea (a few touch ups were made). The original is really excellent.

Hi Thilo, You expressed my sentiments exactly... And maybe that's also what does create a tension. The desire for an object to keep the attention, yet on the other hand the silence by the absence of that object...
As the desolated landscape, with not a single soul in sight (we even passed a vilage of about 100 houses, which was entirely deserted, people seems to evade the area in winter) was making us feel pretty small, the image holds a great tension to me, but for a reason that cannot be shown in a single photo... (and yet, there are two more to come....)

Hugo, I like the color range, the tonal range and the composition. the sky is wisely separated from the foreground. the road makes its' way perfectly through the picture and ends in the unknown. I like the silence that this picture demonstrates.
I personally would love to see something that adds a bit more tension though. On the other hand this would possibly break the silence ;-)

The loneliness of the road brings freedom to my mind. Its curves drive my eyes to the horizon.
The colors are also a pleasure - a mix of pale, warn and cold - that addd to the "empty" mood of the picture. It's all yours, for your pleasure only.
If there were something happening there, it'd close our minds since it would become an image of something that was happening.
The way it is, it's up to our minds to explore the possibilities this open road has reserved to us. I like pictures that respect my imagination.

The road leads the eye nicely into and through the photo. In my opinion the main problem is that there's nothing happening really. It's a nice landscape but for my feeling it lacks a point of interest.
