Hey - thanks everyone. A little background on this photo.
Each year San Jose and some major sponsors host a free jazz concert. About 140,000 people attend. This year there were 8 stages going with a large diversity of styles and muscians. This group was the opening act on Friday night. They really got the audience going. They the area in front of the stage is open for dancing. They allow photographs.
The lighting is stage spotlights. All of the shots from this series are candid an unposed. This image was not cropped in post production. Photoshop manipulation was minimal. Only levels adjusted to increase contrast and an unsharp filter applied.
I wanted to capture the intensity of the live performance.
These muscians get one chance (set) to make their impression. Most have never played to this large a crowd. I felt the same way - one chance to get the shot.

Everyone is absolutely right. I am so impressed with the composition and lighting. This image captures the whole feel of the music and the intensity of the musician. You did a fantastic job! Did the bass player know he was being photographed?

"Balls"...without the slightest doubt or bit of hesitation...
BALLS...Framed perfectly....lighting is FANTASTIC...concept and execution is magnificent....
This is clearly one of the best images posted on this entire site...
This is an extrodinary image Bill.......I will be extremely dissapointed in this community if this image doesnt get a couple of hundred views and pages of comments.....

I am so impressed with the beautiful tones and stark shapness of this photograph, one can even see the string vibrating, a wonderful photograph you have here, Wonderful..
