About I was at Piccadilly Circus going towards the Underground station when I caught sight of this group. I had only one frame left on my film and that was quite a slow film. It was late afternoon so I had to shoot with the lens at full aperture, and this gave a shallow depth of field. That afternoon I had been shooting some portraits of my friends' children and had gor through a couple of films. If I had used up all the film I would have missed this.

It's 1953. The man with the moustache is the strongman from the travelling circus. The father has just picked his son up from the steam train after spending the past few months at boarding school. As for the looks, and the girl fainting, why Queen Elizabeth II has just driven passed after being crowned.
The camera never lies.
Regards,
Graham

I've been away from usefilm for a while working on other things, but thanks to the new format I encountered this image quickly. A marvelous street scene that captures the wonder of these visitors in a great city. Well composed, nice tonality---I love everything about it. Interesting that it could easily have been taken almost anytime in the last half century. Enjoyed the rest of your portfolio as well. Thanks for sharing!

David, this is beautiful. Truly. They appear awestruck at their surroundings. And for one of the few times, I agree with the Editor's Choice award. It appears so three-dimensional, too. This is my favorite of yours.

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17558} 2/21/2004
This is one amazing photograph. Timeless is the exact word that comes to mind. It is so...London, at least the way London makes me feel. As Dave Martinidez said, I have no idea if you shot this yesterday or in the post-war years.

Furthermore, the timeless aspect of this shot would not have been nearly as powerful if it was a color image.

This is one of those shots that make you want to drop to your knees and give thanks that you had the camera in your hand and the frame ready and waiting!

Congrats on the very well-deserved EC. Nicely seen!

This is a triumph over adversity and a great capture of a never-to-be-repeated moment. It's photography of the very highest order. What's more, it's luminously beautiful, too. If you can seize moments like this you should never leave your camera empty of film!

Christian Barrette   {K:21125} 2/14/2004
Very intense - almost dramatic moment. It looks theatrical, like from a "Flying Saucer" movie. Large aperture brought great DOF, except maybe for the hand in the lower right - but totally acceptabe in street photography.
Thank you for your comment and the details concerning the film and processor you use. I would very like to know how you realize your digital versoin : do you scan a print or scan the negative ? And with what scanner.
I use the Nikon Coolscan IV to scan my colour negs and I'm not quite statisfied.

Andre Fersen   {K:1679} 2/13/2004
Odd - the 3 seem dressed for 1965 (when did little boys stop wearing ties as a matter of course?), yet the man in the b/g seems quite contemporary. A classic example of how to do street - which is about the hardest genre of all.

David -- As you know, this is the image that I have been waiting for you to post! I love this image. Just perfect!
