Photographer's Comments This was taken this past summer in Mexico at Punta Mita. This is a resubmit but now with the black portion at the bottom which is the sea. Several friends said that it looks better with it and gives a sense of the entire space, so I have included it. I took this from a cafe where I was having dinner that evening, the sky was spectactular.
Jumping onto John's train of thought... was there any catci sticking up? That would scream mexician sunset in a very powerful voice. either that, or to get the great colours in the sea you could use a ND Graduated Filter, which would allow for a longer shutter time to let more colour into the sea. But you do have nice colours here... the sky is on fire.
The colors are great, but that's all there is. So many sunrise/sunset shots are just that. Color with nothing else. While it is fine for what it is, it is a 'dime a dozen' shot. A better approach would have been to stop eating, grab your camera and tripod and sprint down to the beach to get waves lapping and reflecting in this beautiful color. Foreground objects, ie rocks, tidal pools, etc can take a great sky and turn it into a fantastic shot. Also, it must be way inder exposed because you should have the sky reflecting into the sea, which IMO, would have been a much better look.
