I have been searching for a word that best describes what this photo means to me ...
I think what you have captured here is the essence of the learning process, which I feel is a very elusive quality when one is photographing children.
While I am sure there are technical issues in capturing an image like this - that no one knows better than yourself - for me it has a mystical and indelible quality.

I gotta raise beef with Sony...When are YOU going to build these compacts to allow me to stop down to F64! "I woulda if I coulda!" -- would be interesting to see...
Perhaps one day the photo gods will allow me to capture something similar, if Sony can't do it I'll consider switching to a 4 by 5!

oh my gosh. this is so neat!!! I love it. I have to work on getting one like this now. this is amazing. the close up of the bubble with the child behind him. I've actually never seen one like this. have seen bubble shots; have some myself, but not this close up you did a great job here. going in my favorites. : )
