Hello Jim, I tried to think of something intelligent to say, but recollecting my thoughts, it was just emotional babble! Can I just simply say I'm in awe of your creative mind, no idea how images come to you (eventhough you tirelessly explain and share). There's lots to look at in this image, tied in with the poem gives even more food for thought. Did any of that make sense? Well, I did say I can only offer emotional babble. Nice work Jim.

I'm going to step outside of my comfort zone, be a rebel, and admit that I like the color scheme, but this is just too busy for me. Having simplicity and order is part of my Capricorn nature, so I'll blame it on that. :-) Besides, I can't rave about everything you produce (you're so prolific) else you'd get a swelled head. Very nice Jim. Colors are magnificient. Overall a very pleasing image. Nice image for a school music department I think. Should be rather large. Would like to know your technique on this. Jim,
This is very good. I like that her cheeck is placed where the curve of the cello might otherwise have been. I also like the various abstractions of the cello and the misplaced eyes. Maciek has a good point but you've both addressed -
Maciek's intelligence and articulation blow me away sometimes. He is a good one to have comment on one's work. Because he understands both the intellectual and emotional and comments on both. Me - I am mostly emotional. ;)

You succinctly articulate my dilemma and anticipate the solution.
The dilemma is that real Cubism as developed by Picasso and Braque involved a reordering of pictorial space into 3D cubes, just as you describe. Achieving this with PS, even with the Liquify and Mesh functions in PS7, is no easy thing, especially with a complex image. I know. I've tried. The results haven't been pretty. (Check out the "about" box of my previous posting called "Cubist Chrysler" for a brief discussion of exactly this problem.)
My solution, at least for now, is what art historians would probably call a Cubist mannerism -- although I think, again, you describe it even more accurately as "Squarism."
In addition to reacting against Renaissance concepts of forcing three-dimension space into a two-dimensional medium, my understanding is that the early Cubist were also responding to the lavish palettes of the Impressionists -- and especially to the use of color and light as the primary visual structure for an image. Obviously, I'm not going down the monochrome path either -- at least not with the Cubist/Squarist images.
My heartfelt thanks for taking the time to comment on this one, Maciek. It's a pleasure to know someone else understands the rather obtuse underpinnings of all this.

Surprisingly, once you get the background, the rest really isn't all that much more difficult than any photo composite.
Patricia:
As for the Liquify Mesh, it's actually so simple that you may be disappointed.
Once you create a distortion using the squeeze, expand and rotate Liguify tools, you then simply hit the SAVE button to make a copy of the underlying Mesh, which can then be re-loaded at a later date to duplicate your distortion on other images. That's about all there is to it. In effect, it's a PS "action" for Liquify.
The Liquify tools have all the power. The ability to save the 3-D Mesh they create insures repeatability.

This is a really interesting technique. I like the integration of the musical theme with the feminine. Perhaps a tad busy for my taste-- not sure though, it is still very appealing. I'd like to learn how to use the mesh tool but I haven't been able to figure it out--not too much about it in the books I have. Can you suggest a reference Jim?

Jim; I think this is really cool. I like the subjects, the colors, and the weird, weird composition. This really is a good take off on the 'cubist' style. I see people looking through a glass window in at the instruments-- and the lighting is warm and inviting. This makes a super abstract, and being an old guitar player, the subject has special meaning to me. This is going in my fav's. Cheers. Craig

Fantastic image! I like the lines(strings)running up and down with from side to side also. Thinking it works best this way. Very pleasing work, nice to the eye! Very creative and done so well. Looks difficult. And yes, it has been to the point of creating things that you think of at night! That is where the goofy brown paper bag thing I did, saw it in a movie. Surrealistic Pillow! Jim you may be showing your age here, and I have always felt that few knew who they were. Jim, Great inspiring work and thanks for comments.
