Very beautiful capture. I recently saw some of these on a beach in Northern California, but the wind was so strong I couldn't get a decent shot.

Would not like to meet them while swimming in the water; saw many of them on the mediterranian coast of South France. They are fascinating and so beautiful...!! You captured this one very well!!

A great capture of a difficult reflecting subject. Is it possible that the focus plane is just a tad too close to the camera? The sand provides a great environment for this little creature.

This is a Velella Velella, the By the Wind Sailor ... also known as pelagic hydroid colony. Similar to the Portuguese Man-of-War, this tiny, brilliant blue cousin consists of many hydroids suspended from a sail-like comb. At the mercy of wind and currents, their ultimate destination is often a beach (as seen here) or entanglement in drift kelp. Others wind up as food. They are amazingly beautiful ... often, thousands will be beached together. Nice capture!
