Very nicely composed Bubai!
I like this image and I understand what Nick is saying about the sharpness. But this is very minor issue. Another thing we all have to consider when posting images on this site is that sometimes we have trouble with reproducing our best images to look the way we intended in the Usefilm format (small file size)
ps
Nick is a great guy who will give you lots of wonderful insight into your images. He will amaze you with his observations at times.

Well, Bubai, never be hurt with my comments, and always keep in mind that even my harshest criticism is directed toward the images, not toward you. (I still hope that we all are definitely not to be equated with our images. I would feel very "orthogonal" if I were to be set identical to any of my photos. ;-))

I am still an amateur too, and I want to remain a student in all my life. The benefit of being a student is the limitless enthusiasm for each and every little bit of grasping what is going on, I guess. So we step further hoping to find something, and even if we find nothing at the end, at least we didn't sleep with the dream of the self-convinced, ey?

Surely you will improve. There's not even a single doubt about that and so it is really not even necessary to mention it explicitly. For you it is just natural to improve, judging from your already very very strong sense for composition. Didn't tell you that, as I thought it was self-evident, but in many many aspects I wish I could come close to your composing skills - really! Any you must know by the time that I don't make any "sweet compliments" at all. ;-)

So, just keep your own pace, take a look at the many different retouching possibilities, how they work, and especially take a look at their drawbacks. Unfortunately they all have very very bad drawbacks. I wish it weren't this way, but it's just an imperfect world... :-(

So, don't get too upset and forget about "hurting" when I start yelling "yes sir, but....". It's only that I want to take time and take a look as closest as possible to the efforts of the many people around here. If I would just pass by any say "oh what a great image!"... wouldn't that be a trivialization and thus also kicking down just like that all the thoughts, the attempts, the agony, the work that has been necessary for the images we see? If we accept this, then we must be only sincere, direct, straight to each other, and never forget, no matter how important photography may be for us: at the end we are definitely not the same as our images. Critiques do not hurt us - they hurt our images, and it is good they do so, or else there would be neither necessity nor chance for bettering.

And it is also... that I just can't keep my mouth shut, as my parents noticed so long ago... "So it shall be written, so it shall be done!" said Lord God Nick. ;-) Sometimes I can't stand my own self for that, you know! ;-)

Cheers!

Nick

Nick,

I was a bit hurt with your previous comment. But now I understand you criticism about the defect of the image.
I will try to improve my skill. I am an amateur and still novice photographer. Please do visit my profile and pass me your comments and suggestions. It will help me to enhance my skill.

Thanks again for your message.

Bubai

BTW, it is just these technical facts that count in professional photography, from which I earn a good part of my living. Do you know how much exactness on such facts it takes until you get some jobs like for example some photo sessions for the images in a book? Do you think that you get this by relying on false glorification and sugary comments from "friends" that do not have a single clue?

Please, let's stay realistic. The nice comments from "friends" may satisfy the ego, but that's all. We are not here in order to have our egos sasisfied. This is a forum!!! A forum like this has to be a bit less "sugary" and a bit more professional. The huge collection of one line comments that only say "excellent" is laughable. If I would rely on this and on the credibility of "friends" I would never had a single photo-shooting and I would never had done a single step forward - so leave me in peace with the "credibility" of those who never care to udnerstand basic things about optics, mastering the camera, retouching algorithms, and so on. This kind of personal "liking" from "friends" is definitely not any kind of measure for quality. Sorry, this is not my "invention".

So, it boils doen to: First we master the camera, and you did that well already. Second, if we want to use retouching, then we understand first what the algorithms do. Here you need further work and an open eye for a close look to the many artifacts that are caused by this. If you find this "a hurtful" comment then you simply don't want critiques but "nice opinions".

Cheers!

Nick

P.S.: As about "friends"... It is such a revelation for me to know that people that never had any kind of insight in my life, or shared any of my problems, or simply told me the truth about something I do, are to be considered as my "friends" just because they write to me how "excellent" my images are ocne a day. You know, I have another idea about what the word friendship means.

If you think that a comment should be telling untrue things, then you don't have real interest for the subject under discussion, Bubai! Are we ever going to understand that a comment is about the *image* and not about our "feelings"?

First of all, I don't tell you my "liking" about the image, but the mere truth about facts. It is this I am talking about and not my subjective impressions. To say "I like it" is way not the same as to say "It is well done" - and vice versa of course.

Second of all, the technical perfection has to be faced in combination to the most probable intention of the photographer. Now, the difference between this case of imperfection and many of my imperfect images is exactly this: Intention. This image was meant to be sharp and with good details, or wasn't it? But on the way to get that it was oversharpened. The artifacts of which I was talking about were *not* intentionally taken by camera/lens, and so result cannot be thought as a good image.

Third, what kind of "credibility" do you mean? Do you think that when it comes to facts it is the credibility of many "friends" that is more important than the knowledge of an expert? OK, then next time you get a flu just go to your friends and ask them what to do, instead of asking some doctor. Will that really help you get healthy again? (Of course I wish you to better not get a flu or anything else at all, but you undestand my point, I think.) If the credibility was based on mere "opinion" without knowledge and dedicated work we would still believe that the earth is flat since most people judged this way in the past quite contrary to the findings of the experts. Alone the fact that you have a camera in your hands demands the knowledge of facts (like quantum mechanics) that most "friends" would not even imagine. So.. just because the "friends" say, the world is a continuum, isn't it?

Fourth, I don't expect you or anybody to steadily "like" my work, and I said that at least 1000 times until now. Exactly the opposite, critiques and logical arguments is what I expect. So, take some of my images, read the about, and really say then both things - your personal liking/disliking and also the facts about technical things. The latter cannot be "judged" - it simply *is*. Why should my ego override reality?

- To be continued -

dear nick,
ur comment was very good but i dont think that u r the only 2 judge a picture and ur comment is not welcomed as it can hurt others sentiment and u r not ( seeing ur photographs) able enough to judge the credibility of my freinds,

Very good timing for such a portrait and good exposure balance again. The composition fits well the subject and it has also much of that flair of images in the style of National Geographic.

But you oversharpened it beyond all known limits, Bubai! Was that necessary? Look how strong the zig-zags on the brown-orange stripes is, right left from his left shoulder. Look also to the patterns on his shoulder, or on the patterns at the top right. Or look at the awful pixelations on his eyes, cheeks, or beard.

Could you please attache the original shot?

Cheers!

Nick

P.S.: BTW, I wonder, I really wonder that the people that rated this with an average of almost 7 call themselves "photography enthusiasts" and at the same time do not see such obvious problems on images. This is really totally inacceptable! This image is destroyed. So please attach the original of which I think it must be way better.
