About Taken @ the famous Kwai River.

The largely fictitious film plot is based on the building in 1943 of one of the railway bridges over the Mae Klong - renamed Khwae Yai in the 1960s - at a place called Tha Ma Kham, five kilometers from the Thai town of Kanchanaburi. This was part of a project to link existing Thai and Burmese railway lines to create a route from Bangkok, Thailand to Rangoon, Burma (now Myanmar) to support the Japanese occupation of Burma. About a hundred thousand conscripted Asian labourers and 12,000 prisoners of war died on the whole project.[1][2]

Although the suffering caused by the building of the Burma Railway and its bridges is true, the incidents portrayed in the film are mostly fictional. Historically the conditions were much worse.

Sid,

I saw a documentary on WWII in Singapore. The British were well prepared to fight the Japanes, all cannons were heading the sea. Arthur Ernest Percival was in charge and had a reputation. But Yasumoto was a smart fox and landed in Malaysia with tanks. Thus he marched in his troops to Singapore in 3 days. The brits had no tanks, no airplanes, they had left their weak point open.

The troops of Yasumoto won quickly and Percival had to capitulate. 120.000 men british troops, they did not know they would go to build the bridge over the river Kwai ....

The movie shows mainly a western vision on what happened to allied POW's. Not what happened to the asians. 90.000 Asian laborours died. How is not shown in the movie. Probably much worse as the POW's. SS-methods ... :-(

The figures:

Forced labour was used in its construction. About 180,000 Asian labourers and 100,000 Allied prisoners of war (POWs) worked on the railway. Of these, around 90,000 Asian labourers and 16,000 Allied POWs died as a direct result of the project. The dead POWs included 6,318 British personnel, 2,815 Australians, 2,490 Dutch, about 356 Americans and a smaller number of Canadians

The Fact " The most famous portion of the railway is probably Bridge 277 over the Khwae Yai River (Thai แควใหญ่, English "big tributary"). (The river was originally known as the Mae Klong and was renamed Khwae Yai in 1960.) It was immortalized by Pierre Boulle in his book and the film based on it: The Bridge on the River Kwai. However, there are many who say that the movie is utterly unrealistic and does not show what the conditions and treatment of prisoners was really like.[1] The first wooden bridge over the Khwae Noi (Thai แควน้อย, English "small tributary") was finished in February 1943, followed by a concrete and steel bridge in June 1943. The Allies made several attempts to destroy the bridges, but succeeded only in damaging them in their first attempts. On 2 April 1945, AZON bomber crews from the U.S. 458th Heavy Bombardment Group destroyed Bridge 277. After the war, two squarish central sections were made in Japan to repair the bridge, and were donated to Thailand.

Thanks for taking your time out my friend

When I am not mistaken the historical bridge was at a 100 meters from this later built bridge. At least that is what my guide told me when I was there in 1983.
Many dutch were killed. It was worse than hell.

No problem but I am just wondering why such a low average rating. Nevertheless, let me try to help you out with attached converted to Sepia for that old nostalgic effect for something with so much history at least to us 'Old Folks' like me and then add a simple presentation border. What do you think?
