About I was at the bathroom sink just after I had returned from work when I noticed Smudge, the family pet, sitting directly in front of me begging for attention. As I looked down, I noticed the bathmat on which he was sitting made a perfectly uncluttered background if angled directly down. So, I grabbed my camera, aimed and angled down and slightly diagonally, opened the aperture wide open (near 2.0), focused on his eyes, recomposed, got his attention, and took the shot. I only got this one since he would no longer cooperate, but I was happy with it.

The limited DOF IS what makes portraits so effective. That is one of the great differences between a snapshot and profesional portrait. In addition, you composed the kitty diagonally which adds another nice change to an already very common type of shot. Very nice indeed!

Hi Jim. No this is not another "cat shot". You have used creative composition, dof, light and toning to your advantage. Nice execution in all areas. Regards and thanks for the look.

Fantastic shot of a very overshot subject. It's hard to differentiate yourself with cat shots but you have achieved this big time. In particular I like the tones, the expression, the dof and the way the tail slides up to the corner.

The photo did not scan quite as well as wished, and the original print is a bit sharper than this one. So, yes, there is some sharpness lacking in this version. However, although I appreciate your opinion, I think the angle is a subjective issue. I think it and the low DOF are what make it work so well. To me, straight on and level just seems like so many other photos.

Maybe more artistic, but the angle is slightly vertiginous for me. Not that I imagine you had a lot of choice! Alternative version attached - straightened and selectively sharpened. Improvement? Not sure!

good shot, jim. I like the DOF in this one, or lack there of. Cats can be difficult. Good job.

Jim, I like the composition here, the angle is refreshing from typical cat photos...and the lack of depth helps accentuate the face....Well done!

Aaaw, how cute! i like the colors and the tight composition in this one, cats are very hard to get nice picture of, so i think you should feel proud over this one!
