Opened 1892 when Sydney was very much Victorian, linked to English traditions. Constructed 340 feet long and THREE STORIES high with specially tinted GLASS roof to reduce the harsh Australian sun. It featured magnificent CEDAR STAIRCASES each end, delicate lace ironwork, finely carved balustrades and shopfronts, marble columns and state of the art floor tiling. Other features were unique GAS/ELECTRIC chandeliers and the latest manually operated hydraulic wrought iron LIFTS.
Thank you, M. We don't have a lot of 'history' compared to Europe, etc, and a lot was torn down during the 60s and 70s until the populace yelled loud enough to kerb it. This old arcade was thankfully saved or it too would have gone... Cheers JD
Now this is an amazing architectural design especially as you discribe it and it's history which is so interesting ... meanwhile I love the depth, perspective , and detail as well as the colors and tones...It's lovely and Thank You for sharing it ! Cheers, M~
Thank you, Zeeve, for the comment. I usually take a peek at folks that comment on my submissions and was impressed with a lot of yours, especially the 'grotto' shot. Cheers mate JD
Very nice capture and composition of this arcade, John! I always find places like this very hard to photograph, but you've got the perfect perspective here. Dave.
