About I never realized how much power and energy a fire hose has until a month or so ago I saw these two fire fighters handling a hose. One person to control the hose and one person to hold the person holding the hose.

I love this picture, Jan! Great! The colors in this picture, mostly yellow and black, are very strong. The white adds to the whole atmosphere: strong!
Often I like to see faces, but I don't miss it in this picture.

Thanks Nessa. I dropped out most of the background and the comments are divided on whether or not that was the best way to go. I agree with you; the absence of distraction enhances the picture and calls attention to the subject.

I don't know but I've been around hoses that fill a water truck and well they are powerful. Excellent image and composition.

Dave -- Thanks for the good comment. I made a command decision that the background was distracting and I dropped it out. However I can see your point of view on this to better set the context.

Would have liked to have seen more of the background to put the firefighters more in scene, it looks like it was painted out. Otherwise very nice. Dave

This is an amazing shot. Well exposed image with very sharp details. I actually liked the ps work because it made the composition stronger by isolating the firefighters. Good work.

Doyle -- Thanks for taking the time to give me such an outstanding critique. It is this kind of constructive feedback that we all need to help us stand back and learn where we can improve.

I did get carried away with the curves and contrast but was trying (too hard perhaps) to isolate the image. I did it with a variety of Selects (Magic Wand et al) and the pixel width for applying to some locations was too wide.
The area that bothered me the most was the area between the legs, which Eagle Eyes Chastain caught of course!

Overall I was pleased with the outcome on this one but there are areas that need improvement and I would do it differently (and still most likely will) for better personal satisfaction.

As you picked up on the thread with AJ I still maintain that Street and Journalism are two very distinct categories and I feel that too much manipulation was applied to this photo to qualify as a journalistic endeavor. Street can be raw and gritty as well as approach and reach the level of art; anything goes .....

Thanks again and best to you, Jan

Thanks, Marian. You of all people would be well aware of the hard work and heroism that fire fighters provide to us every day. The devastating fires in Greece were a true test of everything they could bring to the front.
Thanks for your comments.

Jan you got a quality image here of the firefighters . . . focal clarity is just amazing. The BG is disturbing to me . . . it gives the impression they are somehow layered or PS BG work is an issue. Distractions include the blurred area between their legs (with halo?) and the front left pocket has a blurred tan color of the outfit. Farther down is what looks like additional halo issues and the rear helmet has something similar.

I think that the curves were a tad too extreme and the selection was somewhat off. Extreme curves can effect color and lighting too much if not SO carefully watched. I think the original (pre-curved) image may have been more dynamic. Just my opinion, mind you, but there it is. I totally LOVE the clarity of the firefighters and the composition is both dynamic and very well done but for those minor distractions.

Street photography and PJ work generally (IMO) are not tweaked too much (especially PJ work) but lighting and curves are ok. Cropping too. Just my opinion, but a Sacramento Union (newspaper photographer) I knew would adjust light and crop only.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

AJ -- Thanks for the excellent critique. I truly appreciate it.
You raise an interesting point about how far one could/should go for street shots with post processing. This photo was already digitally manipulated: curves & contrast. But are street photos really subject to this rule of ethics?
It seems to me if I had marked the photo in the Journalism category then the picture should remain pristine except for crop and exposure control. But if not marked as Journalism then isn't it fair game for just about anything? After all some forms of street photography are more art than reality.
Thanks for bringing up that interesting point. By the way, note that I did not annotate this picture under the Journalism category.

This is a very strong image. The two fireman stand out wonderfully against the dark background, and the jet of water adds a dramatic touch. The grey patch towards the bottom of the image is perhaps a little distracting, but I'm not sure that it should be removed. It is soft enough not intrude too much, and as this is categorised as a street photo, it should perhaps not be manipulated anyway.

Dear Jan!

What an exceptionally well captured image! WOW!!! Subject matter is amazing, and the composition, all manner of technical details (DOF, exposure, adjustments in pp etc) are spot on! The firemen are pin sharp and in such a great contrast to dark background.

Really a unique work... spendid photo journalism!

Best Wishes,
Aniko :)
