I like the original better, too. You could bring in more contrast the next time, by turning the light onto the most important part of your picture (the front) and have the shadows on the far side.

I just use CS2 to light up the shadows. I got another version. I lost some contrast, and I like the original better, but most of the upper shadows are gone.

Use a light with a diffuser to bounce the light on the shadow/dark part of the face. Right?

I like the shot, but I think it would work a little better if you light up the shadows. At this point the most important part of the scene is, in my opinion, to dark. You could for instance try a piece of white paper.
