Yeah, and that's the only gauge I have to rely on, Julie, is to compare today's work with my previous shoots.
I am happy with the trend, because I know it doesn't always have to be so. I know many other photographers who shoot what they shoot, and their work today looks like their work from 5 years ago. I will be very sad if I reach that conclusion about my own portfolio.
I am HUNGRY - I want to grow. I want to be better NOW. LOL

Paul -- Nice lighting on her face. Still enough shadow on the left side of her face to keep things interesting. I like the separation you achieved by placing her in front of the white part of the structure.

Google "DIY Ring Flash". There are a couple of them out there. I made my own.
One uses a box. Another uses tupperware bowls.
makezine.com/blog/archive/2005/11/how_to_build_your_own_ring_fla.html
I also found a guy who made his own higher quality lensbaby... insane.
What I did is build a box following the above format with a box and cardboard tube. I then just build an extension from the speedlight mounted on top of the camera to the back of the box.
- Foamcore, metal ruler, matte knife. - Hot glue to seal the box. - 3M super 77 spray adhesive and the shiney side of aluminum foil.
Put it all together in 3 hours.
On mine I angled the box with 45 degree cuts.

Yeah, I was using a Sto-Fen omni diffuser. DO you have a link to a site explaining your DIY ring lite, Michael?

This model is stunning.
Sounds like you had some chances to shoot models, what an interesting time. Looks like you had a fill in flash going here, a good move on what seems to be an overcast day.
I recently made a DIY ring flash box, and was really pleased with the results. Maybe this would be something to do if you have more of these opportunities as it really softens the light.

I know what you mean! You gotta love it when God gives us that magnificent softbox lighting we call overcast.

Thank you Vince! We were lucky enough to have cloud skies that morning, so the lighting was quite favorable for portriature.

LOL! You cracked me up with your suggestion for a 'better setting' Gayle. This group shoot was at a local park that had this ONE structure available (ok, there was also picnic tables and a tiny playground set). as the sole structure of any interest, there was usually a queue of waiting photogs and models, patiently waiting for someone to finish up on the porch so they could work it.
Thanks for the warm words, and good to hear from you, Stranger!!
