About This photo was not altered in any way with PS. The image was created using a children's toy. The toy consists of a light that changes color and rotates fiber optic strips.

I use a 30 second exposure to compose this image. I started with my hand opened in the position you see. The toy was held above my hand and lit for about 8 seconds. Then the swirl effect was created by moving the light across the camera's field of view to exposed different parts of the camera's sensor. The "galaxy" effect was obtained by pulsing the lights in different locations across the camera's field of view.

Keep in mind that this is ONE SINGLE capture to create this image.

I saw this playful magicry (if magicry could be considered a word) in a comment to someone else, and I just had to comment on it myself. It's amazing! The colors are brilliant, the composition is stunning, and the technique to achieve this is wonderful! I would love to know what the toy is that you used to create this effect.

Hi Charles
It never ceases to amaze me why this wasn't an Editor's Choice pic.
You have been so imaginative and clever in your planning for this shot you surely must get top marks for this very creative shot.
Well done - and thanks for sharing your secret with us. It will help to make better photographers out of us all! (with a bit of luck - and a lot of imagination!)

Very clever....I can't imagine how you have achieved this Charles....I also think it must be something to do with fireworks....when are you going to let us in on your secret?

An amazing pyrotechnic shot with brilliant color transitions composed very well. The colorful little spiral sparks make it the shot even more astounding. The presence of the hand on the ball makes it even more interesting, but I suppose it was a pretty long exposure. Tell us how??
