About Taken at a swim meet I participated in a few months ago. I used the sports mode and even though the place is brightly lit for some reason my pictures turned out extremely dark. :( I had to excessively brighten them in psp which showed how they were grainy to begin with... not my best but it was my first time shooting sports.

cool...I was a varsity swimmer all through high school.

Yeah, with a point-and-shoot, you're limited in how you can handle challenging situations, but still a nice recovery.

Good effort Carlen... You caught the dive as a visual moment...with the blur providing for the action. Your composition may have been enhanced if you stood three feet to the right, and pointed your lens about three feet left. If you had the platform, and the swimmers in the water, you would have begun a story. Sports, or action photography is harder than most people realize. Your instincts are there, just let them flow. Keep up the good work.

Cheers,

Bill

Brilliant- I love to see the life and movement. And a great blue.

Very powerful feeling of motion in this shot. Some of this is created by the visual dynamics of the sequencing of the divers. They also form an appealing dynamic diagonal.

Carlen:
First off . . . this is really a very good shot; very well composed. Great texture of the water during this (relay?) race . . . and a shutter speed fast enough to freeze the water splash from the diver. The DOF is good and the color is better!
That being said . . . (in my opinion) the shot could be improved by a lower top crop. The inbound swimmers give you a GREAT natural diagonal which you could use more to your advantage by eliminating some of the space at the top . . . space which, in my opinion, doesn't contribute to the shot anyway. I would leave the pennant line intact.
...A great action shot . . . I would have preferred a sharper focus on the first swimmer whereas, to my eye, it appears the float line is focused, as is the swimmer in the lower left foreground. The DOF, and not motion, may be responsible for SOME of the softness there. But the feeling of motion and the power of the shot is very strong and some blur from motion is a good thing anyway. This is impressive work!

Sports are tough to shoot. This is a very nice 1st attempt. The water looks so nice. Those divers , being a little blurred, really reflect the motion of the event. Regards Ron.
