Alicia, I like the backlighting and the well done composition. Your work could benefit from some fill lighting with reduced flash exposure to fill in the foreground shadows. Give it a try next time. I don't shoot Canon, so I can not suggest the settings. With my Nikon, I have the camera in aperture priority and then pop up the flash for the fill - that's simple!
