Sarah, I would like to see less foreground, but I'd also like to try just a sliver of water reaching the right hand side of the frame. I think the tress add something, and wouldn't lose them.

Like all of the above who commented, I think this sunset is very nicely done. You kept the colours soft, warm but true. For me, a bit less of the dark FG would be good. In two minds about losing the tree(s) or not.
Well done nonetheless.

Thanks Heather. I totally agree about the sky, I wish I had a lower view-point. I live in Wales, and I'm so near the sea, that we hardly ever get any snow. ( Too near the mild west coast. )

Hi sarah,
Nice sky. You did what I always do, & realised the mistakes AFTER taking the pic! You spotted most of my thougts on this one. Here's a couple anyway.
Silhouettes are nice with a sunset, in fact I dont see why you'd want any detail in the front. However, what I think when I look at this is that I want MORE sky LESS land, I'm sure it gets lovely & dark blue up there.
Could you have got lower so the the tree silhouette wasnt bisected by the other shore as the light on the water in this one isnt spectactular. I bet if you go back you can get some great shots of the light playing on the water.
I was in snowy England over new year - where's your pix? Didn't it snow over your way? Happy New Year.

Sarah, for a first time sunset picture, you?ve done a terrific job. I know exactly what you?re saying when talking about how difficult sunsets can be to photograph. I love your composition in this shot and also have to agree with Andrew regarding the use of an ND filter. A silhouette of a tree can sometimes (more often than not) add to a sunset picture instead of one showing detail in a tree. Then again, sometimes the opposite is true. For some shots, I'll add on a half ND4 to regain some foreground detail...but I just got it and need more practice at using it.

Sarah, what is going on here? This is your first attempt at a sunset and you have done a top class job! I love it. Maybe it is better with the foreground detail lost in silhoette. The sun is bright but does not wash out everything and the colouring is beautiful. The trees create a nice effect and I think you thought of the composition well and it paid off. I want to see more of this stuff from you, especially with this lens since I have it too and then I have an excuse to try the same thing myself.I like the sky too and how it darkens away from the centre. Man you did well here. I must try sunsets too, instead of doing the 4:00am sleepy eye routine.Catch you later!

Absolutely! You are now drawn into the image and not the frame. I have learned this the hard way with our prints. Each image (over 100 now and counting) has to be matted in a color coordinated mat. I used to look at the mat, to see which looked better on the picture. Now, I look at the picture and try to find the mat that brings the MOST out of that image... confused?? because I sure am!! Does look better though. Thanks for the note.

This is very nice Sarah. Have you tried it with a black border...the red seems a bit strong. Also try the black with only 1 pixel of the white trim. Just a thought. I like the subtleness of this one...quite peaceful. Nice. (8

Nice capture, God color without being oversaturated and level horizon. I might like to see the lager tree just a bit more to the left.
