Beautiful photo. With pets there is a danger to fall in the cliché-calender look. But you did not fall in this trap here. With your great composition and the softones used here that brings a special mood, you are giving us a very very good picture of a cat. You are an artist! Thanks a lot for your explanations about PS technics. It's very useful.

Fantastic..PS is always a problem for me in colour photo. But your pic push me to go ahead and try again. Our cats too believe we control the universe because in their universe there is only food.

I love this - not a typical pet photo in the least. Whoever said you were outdoing Wegman is right. Wegman's photos leave a lot to be desired sometimes. I like how her ears seem to be within the tree line - nice framing effect for her.
I bet you had wet knees after taking this one.

Fantastic job in processing this image for great improvement in style, substance, and impact... Terrific capture of light, soft tones, and expression, with wonderful composition... And thank you for explaining your process - such a major help to people here, and the real reason Usefilm exists: the sharing of valuable information and technique so that we may all grow as imagists... You are an inspiration... Mahalo, GP.

Just wanted to echo everyone's comments and say thanks for the lesson (which lead to subsequent sparks of ideas). The soft, slightly blown out background is unusual, and yet very subtle to me. Perfect work on the eyes. All around great!

I want you to know how much I appreciate the detailed comments you make about PSP work: each image is like a visit to the John Charlton School of Photography! I learn so much from your comments and begin to see ways in which I can improve my own work. Thanks very much, it is terrific.

another lovely image John and I am laughing as I type about your story as I used to get the same look from our cat when it turned cold - they truly do believe we are able to control the weather for their comfort!!!

John, you are getting very adept at the use of PSP. I think the decision to use the gaussian blur was the right thing because I sense that the adjustments might have made for a bit of "grain" (i.e., noise) in the image. The result of your efforts has really turned out well.
I really enjoy the work you are doing with your cats. You've really found some wonderfully expressive photos that allow us to see their "personality." Keep it up and you'll be outdoing William Wegman's work with his Weimaraners. :)

Attached is the original jpeg resized for posting. I did a number of things to the original in Paint Shop Pro 7 to get the result you see above.
After croping and resizing, I applied an unsharp mask at Radius=1.00 Strenth=100 and Clipping=5.
I then selected Jenny's eyes and nose and gave them a small amount of colour saturation (automatic adjustment set to normal bias and normal strength) to make these areas stand out a bit more.
Next, I made a histogram adjustment to reinforce the light and airy feel I was going for. I reset the black point to about 8% over the darkest value and moved the midtones way over from 0 to 2.43 Gamma. I left the highlights untouched.
Then I duplicated the picture in an overlying layer with a 15% Gaussian Blur and using a normal blend, I set the opacity of the top layer at about 20% allowing the majority of the underlying layer to show through but giving the picture a somewhat softened look.
Finally, I used my Eraser tool set at one pixel to remove the soft focus top layer on the vertical slits of Jenny's pupils revealing the pure black underneath.
I have included all of this information here because I am just learning to use all these tools and this is a great way for me to go back and see what I did.
