Oh, yeah.... Simple, strong, and... the 9th?!

I like the rather minimalistic composition, allowing quite an excessive amount of sky. I think it works well here. The slightly foggy foreground is also a delicate touch. Great shot... It seems that, like the sea, this part of the world is never the same. Excellent series...

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi James, I like the motion in this one, I think it really adds to this photo. Good partial view, too...

Beautiful! Razor sharp image James. Wonderful light shining on the mooses fur and super exposure on the snow. I see he still has that dusting of snow on his nose. At least he's not up to his belly in it anymore and he's moving. I was wondering about him. Great capture and very nicely presented with the complimenting frame James. I really like it and into my faves it goes.

Cheers - Ann

Beautiful shot of a magnificent animal. The clarity really enhances the crispness of winter. And the snow on the muzzle tells a story of how the moose has to make a living in deep snow. Well done!

Interesting observation Hugo. The image was shot as a vertical, and I cropped it to 4x5 to reduce the wasted space, mainly at the top as I remember. (I'm away on travel at the moment and don't have access to the original image to confirm that.) I think there's more space on the left than on the right for two reasons. First, it gives him some room to walk into the frame, and second, it was probably a convenient alignment to have one of the focus sensors on one of his eyes.

Hi James, classic, powerful and impressive bull. Majestical animal, captured in it's true glory. Just curious: why did you change the aspect of this image? Just a bit of guessing on my side, the composition does give me a feeling it was taken in landscape format, where a portrait format is arguably more suitable for this type of "official portraiture" the slightly bigger space on the left side seems to subscribe this theory. Either way, it's not really important, as it is still a very powerful shot. Excellent catch.

Cheers,

Hugo

Thanks Jim. Not sure if the horizon is level, but I'm pretty sure that a plumb bob would be vertical. I wish his eye would have been clearer too. He had it closed the whole time he was standing with his head up --- probably so he wouldn't have to look into the low sun.

Thanks for the comment Ann. It sure was "very cool" --- -30F (-34C) to be precise!! Just slightly cooler than your typical down-under temperature.

I've taken a quick look at your portfolio and will be back to comment. I love your bio. Sounds like you have a travel bug too. Pleasure to make your acquaintance.

Thanks for the comment Dave. I agree that the shot would be better if you could see his eye, but he had it closed the whole time he had his head up --- I guess he didn't like looking into the low sun. I love the 500! It's sharp and fast.

Thanks Dave. This shot was perfect timing. I was diving up the main road through the park looking for targets of opportunity, and saw these trees in great light in a good setting.

What a great catch here, James! Perfect timing, or was it patience, to catch the light shining on these frost covered trees against the dark shadows!

I envy you my friend. I can't even imagine what it feels like to look at such an animal out in the wild. Us city boys can only do our close ups of cockroaches. Thanks for posting this beautiful image.

It makes you appreciate what these animals have to do just to survive. "Natural life" ain't easy, those creatures live unspeakable hardships. I really like the snow over the nose, though it might have been more penetrating if the eye was more defined. Are you happy with your 500mm Canon f4?

Great winter shot. Is the horizon level? It doesn't look like it is, but it's tough to know as an armchair photographer. The only thing that would make this even better is being able to see the eye a little clearer, but you have to make do with the situation. Frankly I wish I had a moose shot as nice as this.

Now this is very cool.... and I'll bet the moose is too. I had no idea there were moose in WY. I just went all the way to Alaska to see moose and although I did see lots I didn't get a photo anywhere near as great as this one and I didn't see a bull either so this is a treat for me. I love the dusting of snow on the poor beast. Doesn't look like much of a lunch where he is. Superb exposure with all that snow. Wonderful photo. I love it.

Cheers - Ann

Yet again a bit later, still well within the magical hour, but loosing the subtleties already due to the increasing light. It casts a slightly greenish yellow haze over this photo, I think. Very softly, though. I find it very interesting to see how the feel of this landscape changes with the dawn. Cool!

Cheers,

Hugo
