Interesting treatment. It looks like a poster.

Have you thought of doing a natural version, shooting through rainy glass?

Timothy, 2 suggestions that would apply to either film or digital:

1. Use a warming filter - cloudy light is cold.
2. Use an nd grad filter to hold detail in the sky. Clouds can be deceptively bright and the medium can't handle the range.

All that said, it's a great photo. The red really livens things up. But I can't help feeling sorry for this guy -

Hi Tim..... Thanks for your input into the forum.... This is a very silent beautiful setting. I like it alot. Good composition with the kayak and lighting is excellent. ... I;m not saying that you have to do this.. but with some of my boating pix .. I narrow it down to a semi panarama shot. .. Seems to add a more dramatic effect. .. Try it .. you may like it also.

~~~~~~~~~ Best ....... Bill
I agree with you that the colours still look natural enough... In fact I like the contrast between the strong reds and the 'dull' background.
I do not have a suggestion on improving saturation (other than post-processing) in this kind of lighting conditions. But I have another tip: for landscape photography this may not have been the best day, however for e.g. still life photography it may be very good: colors and structures appear very natural in overcast weather.
Paul,
Thanks for the feedback. I'll try calming it down a bit in the sky. I want to retain the hyper-grainy feel as I like the 'impressionist' aspect it gives the picture, but I can see that the detuned TV look might be a bit much.
I see what you mean about drowning out the ESB - the spire has a pair of pink lights you can barely see.
I don't mind the manipulation but think it may be a bit harsh especially in the sky.. it sort of drowns out the empire state bldg.. still, like the effect if it was just a little bit less
Thanks Richard.
Right about those plane windows, but I'll take breathable air over a good photo any day.
I'm looking forward to taking some aerial pictures once I get further along in my flight training. A little C-172 is never going to reach 25,000' (especially not in a thunderstorm) but some of the things I've seen from 3,000' have been breathtaking. Really liked your vintage aircraft pictures.
This can almost stand on its own, because of the variation in the clouds, an so it avoids my declaration of "beautiful background in search of a subject". It is almost impossible to get a really good shot out the window of a commercial jet. The engineers seem to concentrate on on little things like cabin pressurization and totally ignore the interests of passenger/photographers!
Yes, that blob above the water tank is a bird. At least we'll call it that and not a speck I forgot to clone out!
Thanks for the comments. I was taking pictures for most of the flight and this was the only one that really worked out.
Found out that the trick with shooting from a plane window is to sit ahead of the engines. If you're behind the engines then you will see heat haze from the exhaust along the bottom half of the window. It looks like distortions in the glass, but it's not.
