I too would have liked to have seen the whole flower, but the composition that you feel is the best is what counts. It is beautiful the colours and detail are stunning, and the background colour really works to bring out the best in the iris

I shot lots of variations of this flower. I chose this one over ones which showed the entire blossom, but I really don't know why. It just felt "right". This was shot indoors, with natural light coming through a window. Outside, where they were blooming, it was raining and windy, so I cut one and brought it inside. The blue background is a blue lawn chair I used to create a neutral background.

Excellent macro, Steve. Very nice and sharp details, great soft light and beautifully blurred background. Very pleasant and attractive work.

Maybe it could be improved if the bottom petal hadn't been cut by the frame.

Haven't been able to get on the net lately, so I didn't answer Ned's question. I always use a tripod. I generally use Aperture Priority.

wonderful capture!
i'm curious to know what exposure mode you use for such shots. i usually use aperture priority on my camera with max. aperture size (f/3.5-6.3) to blur the background and have the max. possible shutter speed.

DO you use a tripod?

Kurt: I used to collect silver dollars, but sold most of them, and now only have a couple. The remaining coins in the photo are the result of travels to do my photography. I did arrange them to show off a variety of coins, and piled them deeply enough so that you can't see the background paper they were sitting upon. I'm glad I've inspired a few people to think of shooting similar items. That's what this website is all about!

Hi Steve. I really love the lighting and the depth that it adds to this shot. The various shades of metal and the shadows add an artistic interest to what could have been a simply utilitarian photo of a pile of coins.

The image is so well balanced, I have to wonder if the arrangement of coins was purely chance or the result of careful planning.

Are you a collector or are these souvenirs of world travels? The two visible Morgans really stand out.

I think you've inspired me to see what I can do with some spare change... Best wishes, Kurt

Mary Sue it was one of those days where it was rainy, but sun kept coming through the clouds at times. It also was spring breakup, and the snow was melting and sloppy, so it wasn't fun walking. I simply put the coins on a piece of paper on a table by a window and shot the photo when the sun did come through the window.

Steve, looks like you have been to a lot of cool places!

You sure got a lot of light and shadows for a rainy day. Did you use a light source?

It works, though since it adds to the texture.

I love the way the catchlight in the eye is not only seen in the bird, but in the reflection as well.

Thank you for the reply Steve.
I hope to buy the D2X this year.
I'm also not a fan of the Nikon software, alternatively there is the plug-in for PS and there is a freeware available called RawShooter essentials 2005, you might download and give it a try, at least there is a few options.
Thank you for the reply and I hope you don't mind if I check back with you later before I buy mine.

spring with snow so deep, wow !
very nice capture, nice composition.
I like how you capture the snow, the one on the roof has shown wonderful texture, while it's so smooth on the ground
