Nice street candid. You did not provide light source information but the lighting is a bit harsh. Would have been better if his collection of belts(?) had been in sharp focus. Also, suggest cleaning up the white spot near his mouth. And who is the other photographer in the background and what is he snapping? Or is it your reflection in a shop window? If the latter, I think it is interesting! At least it seems to indicate that you did not use an on-camera flash unit:-)

I think Andrew summed things up quite well, these shots are difficult to get spot on so perhaps bracketing a few exposure levels is a good idea and maybe try a grad ND filter if you have one. In post-processing, keep an eye out for and the correct the Pisa Hotel effect.

Is this the Dubai Creek Hotel? Classic camera but not a calssic shot! I think a big problem here is the quality of scan which I'm sure does not do the shot full justice. However the shot needs to be levelled out so we loose the leaning tower of sheraton effect (my girlfriend works for Starwood...she'd be very upset). Shooting into the sun like this is always difficult and I'd be interested to find out how you metered this, or to be hounest, did you let the camera sort out the exposure for you? (I think the AE1 was the first SLR camera to have auto exposure). I guess you shot from a boat which would explain wonky framing and also why you probabaly just ahd to get the shot whilst you had the opportunity, but I'd like to see those objects in the foreground removed from the frame.
Its a shame we can't see this image in all its glory, I'm sure the print you scanned from is more worthy of praise.

mohammed, maybe the programme of the ae1 tricked you or the other way around. the pictures definitely seems too dark. i cannot see anymore what your idea was you wanted to show and as much as the technique to reduce colour on a colour photo so much that it ends up like a b/w one, there still remains the question of readable composition and/or contrast structure. the nile is there every day so you can try again and show us the development of your idea. btw: i propose to chose a more significant part of the cairo skyline, say closer to the nile hilton or the nile tower? just an idea. regards charlie.f.kohn@sixpence-pictures.com // madrid
