Did you take yours on the same day as you posted? Because I took my photo on exactly trhe same day!.
And years ago I took the one attached (your photo reminded me of it), I posted it as Waves I.

Like you, Alison, I doubt that this is a dahlia! :-)
Difficult to tell what it is without seeing the habitus and other leaves.
But that aside, it IS a very nice flower, the light and colors are really nice and I like the two buds peeping out from behind. Maybe the crop is a bit too tight?

Your lily has a beautiful red color, a very difficult color to photograph. Your DOF is also very good.
I think I would have cropped this differently, not square but rectangular, cropping much more of the bottom. The white spots on the lower right are a bit distracting and so is the background.

Your image has those rich fall colors indeed. I'm just missing some sharpness in the left leaf.
