Critique By: Morgan Smith  (K:304)

I see something in my pictures, which is why I like them. I attempt to convey a message, or an image. Not neccessarily a 'picture', or identifiable object. That is what I find to be the 'beauty' of it.
And as to you asking if I got what I intended to do. Yes, I did acieve what I wanted to in the end through this picture. Not through my taking the picture, but through posting it.

Would you like to know what I see?
I see what always reminds me of the movie Hannibal Lecter. A muzzle or gag on someone's face. Was this the intended? No, I set something up to get an interesting "blob" (a blob is really an spot, but nevermind that).
However, I did achieve what I intended to with conveying a meaning or idea with this photo. That of people attempting to silence me and my pictures. Many have told me my pictures are neither photo's, nor art. Some have called them blobs, shit, I assume you get the gist. With this I intended to stir some controversy, perhaps shed some light. PhotoArt? Crap? Art? Abstract? What is it? My photo's are not passive like 98% of the photo's here, I attempt to engage the viewer.

So...After all this, I still don't get it. Do I think a little off the beaten path? Oh yes. My wife swears I think right off the edge. If you can call it thinking at all. So I'm familiar with the 'abstract' concept.
You say that you set these shots up, Morgan. And I'll belive you. Did you get what you set out to do? If so, then be damned with our opinions. I do agree that it seems like many folk here recently give two word comments. I agree that it's rather useless stuff, and you just blow it off. I recently submitted the worst photo I could find in my junk, and submitted it just to see what would happen. I titled it 'Trash'. Or 'Junk'. Whatever. But...
I still don't get this one. Why, instead of defending it so, just tell me what it is so I can get it. And enjoy it. You could teach me something here.
Or, you could tell me you dropped the camera in an out-house by accident and make me laugh.
Fill us all in. Teach us what we have not seen. Please.

I would have to disagree, Sue...People rate it all tens, and say beautiful shot. On the other hand, they rate me ones and tell me that they don't get it..so, I am essentially being punished, for their own lack of understanding or creativity, without any comments. If it is a beautiful shot, it is implying it is flawless, and needs no more comments. I also receive the majority of my comments as these, so what's the point? I disregard those comments to begin with, I know a large majority does not want to understand, and will continue to rate me as all ones.

On the flip side, I also dislike the "fluffers" who simply say, I like it. On the whole, unless what I feel has already been said I will explain what I like, or don't like etc.

The enigmatic quality is what draws me to it. The toy camera look is hard to convey with digital, but here it is.

Hmm..
I looked up the word "abstract" @ Dictionary.com - I could have used my "analogue" dictionary but figured I'm online.. why bother. Here's what dictionary.com has to say:

1 Considered apart from concrete existence: an abstract concept.
2 Not applied or practical; theoretical. See Synonyms at theoretical.
3 Difficult to understand; abstruse: abstract philosophical problems.
4 Thought of or stated without reference to a specific instance: abstract words like truth and justice.
5 Impersonal, as in attitude or views.
6 Having an intellectual and affective artistic content that depends solely on intrinsic form rather than on narrative content or pictorial representation: abstract painting and sculpture.

So, by looking at a definition of the word "abstract" and knowing that this has been classified as such, I would state that; while I don't get it - because there's not enough there for me to "get" - I do think that this image falls under definition #'s 1, 3 and 6.

The photographer, while asking for critique, has responded in such a way that makes me think that he falls under definition #5.

Then, Stephen, please do. I don't see what the problem is. I set these up, like one does with their pretty birdie, and I shoot. As for dropping acid back in high school, it looks like it has done some permanent damage to you.

Hmmm. I could drop my camera on the ground, and get abstracts too.. No, I don't get it. It's a blob, plain and simple. I hesitate to use the word "image" because it looks to me like more of a photographic "typo". One does not have to know what exactly is the subject of a photo to like or dislike, but this is just plain nothing. No subject, no light, no focus, just something strange, surrounded by black. Have you tried watercolors or oil painting instead? People tend to appreciate painted artworks that have no bearing better than photos. Sorry, Morgan. I know it sounds harsh of me, but I too, don't share your vision, and I love abstracts, ever since I dropped acid back in high school.... {;-)

The intention of my actions was not to attempt to disjoint my works from others; rather I wanted people to take into account other things and not rate it on its groundings in reality. Nearly every other picture (if not all, I believe) have been down-trodden because they generally don't relate to something material possession that you can go to a park and take some pictures of. Everyone seems to obsessed with relating it or identifying it as something, classifying. I really just want people to understand what I am attempting to achieve - which is not a bird on a branch but a mind-expanding, perhaps amusing, disturbing, intruiging, and maybe even perplexing travel....

Morgan, your elitist attitude toward your "art" leaves much to be desired. As a member of this community, if I want to rate this a 1 because to me it is not aesthetically pleasing, I can do so. By not asking to rate it a one, you imply that you know it is not a good photo, but it should be rated better anyway. You must take the bad with the good. Personally I find little appealing in this photo. And because there is nothing in it to identify with, I can not comment on whether you have done anything well technically. I'm sorry I can't share your vision.

you have affected this viewer cuz my eyes ache. not an insult, just the truth. it reminds me of those ink blot tests, something i am probably overdue to take. hmmm....i see a fist pounding down on something metallic and bubbly...i also see the metal beak of a bird that is missing its head...

Well, at least you tried. I know that abstracts aren't for 'everyone'. And I appreciate you not rating it if you do not understand. I believe what I meant was that abstracts are of course grounded in reality but it takes a very imaginative and creative weird person to understand and enjoy them completely.

I bow my head before the moderator's words
:
as in other communities insults and virtual fist-fights
are the standing order of the day

better a word to de-escalate
at the right moment
but anti-abstracionism is overwhelming and normally rude
& ruthless,
too
with regards to the pic: a bit too concrete: don't compromise, morgan!
please!

an abstract is always concrete
as the truth

the harder to identify
the more people shy away
:
fear of obscenities and even more
of the unknown
(to state it at best
